March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Pet People”
Petting Nugget makes me less anxious.
Were you one of the 11 million people who adopted a pet during March 2020 through December 2020 of the pandemic?
In August 2020, our family adopted Nugget, the puppy formerly known as Ferret, from Puppy Haven Rescue.
“Among people who adopted [during these months], 36% said they adopted to ease depression.”
Nugget is a high-strung, energetic, feisty, easily-wired JackChi. I’m a high-strung, energetic, feisty, easily wired human.
When he allows me to pet him, he especially loves chest rubs as shown in the image above. That’s my hand. Petting, cuddling, and doting on Nugget helps me ground my energy and remember to deepen my breathing.
Petting Nuggets soft fur comforts me.
It feels symbiotic. I think if he could purr, he would. His body language says he loves these chest pets, like when he puffs out his chest to ask for more.
Much like when my daughter was two and intuitively cradled my cheeks in her hands before bedtime. The effect calmed me. I think it helped calm and soothe my daughter too.
Loving touch is good for our mental health.
