Telephone Scammers Pretending To Be Amazon Employees
They are thinking up new schemes
More people are shopping online during the pandemic
Government officials are always warning against fraudulent deals being promoted by scammers. They are using the internet and the telephone to try and cheat people out of their hard earned money. They keep coming up with new scams and schemes.
One of the latest telephone scams of which I have become aware has been from someone supposedly calling from Amazon. They pretend to be an employee of Amazon calling to verify information about a recent order.
They must think that EVERYONE has an Amazon account so they are calling people randomly or they are calling people who actually have accounts.
I received one of those phone calls. The caller said that it was regarding a $700 order which had been placed on my Amazon account. I do not regularly shop at Amazon and had not ordered anything from Amazon for months.
If I had clicked on number 1 as advised to do to get information about the order, they likely would have been able to scam me somehow or they would have tried to convince me that I needed to give them information to clear up the matter.
Most people are using cell phones these days, and the scammers are getting access to cell phone numbers somehow.
My wife received a call which said it was regarding a $200 Amazon gift card which had been charged to her account. Since she does not have an Amazon account, she knew that it was definitely a scam.
It is advisable to simply hang up if you get one of those calls. You should never click on any call that is suspicious. Many people do not answer the phone if they do not know who is calling.
The scammers are always coming up with new fraudulent ideas with which they are trying to cheat people. The phone calls can appear to be coming from a local number or a state far away. Authorities indicate that many of the scams coming to the United States are actually from another country.
Although many of the targets of scams have been senior citizens, these new Amazon scams are going after people of all ages. If someone calls and asks for personal information or to remotely access your computer, be sure to hang up. Do not give out personal and bank information to anyone unless you initiated the call.
There is a way to report possible scams to Amazon or other merchants when such a call comes. It can also be reported to the FTC. The likelihood of the scammers being caught and stopped is quite remote. Most are able to cover their tracks and avoid being caught by law enforcement. They deserve to be in prison, especially if they are successful in their scams, but most are able to avoid the law.
Finances and money are a large part of life. We need to be careful with what we have so that criminals do not cheat us. There are dishonest scammers trying to take money from unsuspecting people.
A lot of people are getting scammed and ending up losing money because of falling for something that may sound legitimate to them. It is important to be vigilant to avoid becoming a victim.
