How much do you make annually when you work?

Basically you will:

  • Multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 (or just 2,000 to round it). There are 2080 work hours a year when someone works the average 40 hours a week
  • Another way to multiply is multiply your hourly rate by 2 and put “,000” after it. $5.00 an hour is (5 x 2) = 10 || 10 + ,000 = 10,000. This one is probably the easiest. The reason I’m not concerned about being 2,080 specific is because you may miss 2 days a year, life happens. Your work may close down for a day if an IT issue arises. If you are that concerned about 80 hours, get a better job.
  • Or add $10,000 per $5.00 and hour

In any given year, you will work 2,080 hours if you work regular full-time hours.

Q: If you make $10/hr, how much will that be?

A: You will make $20,800 before taxes

  • If you make $5/hr, you will make $10,000 before taxes (rounded).
  • If you make $15/hr, you will make $30,000 before taxes (rounded)
  • If you make $20/hr, you will make $40,000 before taxes (rounded)
  • If you make $25/hr, you will make $50,000 before taxes (rounded)
  • If you make $30/hr, you will make $60,000 before taxes (rounded)

How much does your doctor make? $110,000 translates to about $55 an hour.

From here you can play around with it. If you work about 60 hours a week instead of the average 40. $15/hr for 60 hours a week (2080 = 40 hours + 1040 = 20 hours, = 3120 hours a year) is equal to $46,000 (rounded up).

The math

$5/hr. = $10,000/yr. as stated before; $5/hr. for 20 hours then = $5,000/yr.) Remember the rules at the beginning.

  • 40 hours + 20 hours = 60 total worked hours
  • First) $15/hr. x 2 = 30
  • 30 + ,000 = $30,000
  • Second) 20 is half (1/2) of 40, so it would be $15/hr x 1 = 15
  • 15 + ,000 = $15,000
  • Then add and extra $1,000 for the total 2080 + 1040 hours, instead of our math at $2,000 + $1,000.

Again, it’s about $46,000.

Your House

The average living space required for a family of four to live comfortably is around 2400 square feet. It is widely believed that each person in a home requires 200–400 square feet of living space. The average cost to build a home of that size will range between $147,000 to $436,000.

Many Americans are not fortunate enough to be able to run out and purchase a home of that size.

The minimum income required for a home of this size is just above $59,000 a year. An hourly rate of $29.00 an hour or $1100.00 a week.

If your earnings are close to this level, then you are one of the lucky Americans who can afford to purchase a home and comfortably raise a family.

Attitudes on this matter have changed over time. There was a time not that long ago when it was common for large families to live in tiny houses. Thankfully, standards of living have improved dramatically since then, and average home size (in square feet) has steadily increased since about 1985. As you can see here, the increase in size has been quite dramatic.
