Texas Congressman Ted Poe advocated for a harsher sentence for Brock Turner, emphasizing that rape is never the victim's fault, during a speech on the House floor on June 9, 2016.
Abstract
During a session in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Ted Poe from Texas spoke out against the lenient sentence given to Brock Turner, a convicted rapist. Poe read excerpts from the victim's impact statement and called for the removal of Judge Aaron Persky, who presided over the case. He argued that the six-month jail sentence was insufficient and did not reflect the severity of the crime. Poe, with a background as a prosecutor and judge, highlighted the need for societal change in recognizing the gravity of sexual assault and rape, stressing that the responsibility lies solely with the perpetrator. He also criticized the mentality in some courts that downplays the severity of such crimes when committed by individuals from reputable backgrounds. Poe's speech underscored the importance of a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual violence and the necessity for the justice system to support victims.

“Rape Is Never The Fault Of The Victim
And that’s just the way it is”
-Ted Poe on the floor of the house June 9 2016
Yesterday, June 9, on the house floor, Texas Congressman Ted Poe read excerpts from the statement of the student who was raped by Brock Turner. He called for Aaron Persky, the sentencing judge, to be removed and the rapist to do more time:
Poe, a prosecutor and criminal court judge in Texas for more than thirty years, demanded that the punishment be longer than a semester in college.
“Clearly, Brock is a chip off the old block”, Poe said, referring to Dan Turner’s calling the rape “twenty minutes of action.”
“There is an archaic philosophy in some courts, that sin ain’t sin if good folks do it”, Poe continued.
“As a country, Mr Speaker, we must change our mentality and make sure that people recognize sexual assault and rape for the horrible crimes that they are”
“As a grandfather of eleven, I want to know that my granddaughters are growing up in a society that has zero tolerance for this conduct, this criminal conduct.”
“No means no and a woman who is unconscious does not even have the ability to consent or fight back”
“Victims like this remarkable woman must know that society and the justice system are on their side…”
“When rape occurs, the criminal is trying to steal the very soul of the victim.”
“Because, Mr Speaker, rape is never the fault of the victim. And that’s just the way it is.”
