Tea and Other Drugs

A Story into the Understanding of Plant Medicine: Part I

There once was a girl, let’s call her Annabelle, who grew-up very sheltered and restricted. Very naive, innocent, and unaware about so much of the world; yet, she had a quality within her that would always grant her deeper understanding to the world around her so long as she tapped into it. It would grow and grow throughout her lifetime and lead her places she couldn’t have imagined… her curiosity.

As she continued to learn and grow and explore the world around her, and all she was exposed to, she worked hard to please everyone in her life as best she could. Even though it felt like nothing would or could ever be enough, she never gave up.

Skipping ahead into early adulthood, she met a boy who would change her life and open-up the world to her, let’s call him Rodriguez. Rodriguez had his own familial stories and worldly interactions that had shaped him as well, but when he met Annabelle he felt comfortable, safe, and at peace. Something about her authentic and genuine spirit told him he could trust her. More than that, he knew he needed to protect her shining light from a world filled with various people who would prove to be jealous, controlling, and unkind.

Annabelle and Rodriguez had a wonderfully open, healthy, and happy relationship — when their families weren’t involved — and they learned many things from one another, as well as together in the life they shared with one another. Much like Aladdin and Jasmine, they trusted each other almost instantaneously, and shared a whole new world together.

Eventually they took classes together that invited them into a new exlporation of the world and all it had to offer. Holistic practices such as energy work and herbalism. Their families, and others, would warn them about the evils of the world, especially these dangerous teachings and practices, but much like Ariel (the little mermaid) they didn’t see how a world made by God would be filled with so many healing plants if we weren’t supposed to use them.

They would continue their journey in life together as well as their desire to learn and grow past their families’s, especially Annabelle’s, chagrin. Rodriguez always encouraging Annabelle’s journey, questioning, and eventually her healing process…

Discovering the healing powers of true faith and spirituality, energy, herbs, and so much more, Annabelle slowly learned the ‘drugs’ of her childhood trauma — it wasn’t the lessons in life and holistic therapies that she should fear, but rather the lies, manipulations, and controlling power of her family dynamic. They feared her expansion because it would eventually free her from their reign.

What’s the point to this story?

People in our lives, like our family members, might be more afraid of our growth than we are, because it means that they could, and likely will, lose the control they once had over us.

As we expand our minds, our sense of self, our belonging to in and of the world, we challenge the status quo of what we have been taught in our familial dynamics and paradigms. Some families handle this well, with dignity, and even a sense of excitement; whereas, others view it as a threat.

These familial bonds, we are likely unaware of, can be so limiting and essentially drug-inducing.

Just as the saying might go that not all ‘drugs’ are ‘bad’, the same can also be true that not all ‘love’ is ‘good’, and that is what this story will gradually show as it unfolds. Relational trauma of any and all kinds leaves wounds that take time and effort to heal. Much like overcoming an illness or an addiction, regaining a sense of self after such devastation is beyond challenging or explanation.

In this series of Tea and Other Drugs, I hope to not only share the wonderfulness of holistic practices such as herbals, yoga, massage, and energy work, but also create an awareness about the misconceptions around ‘but it’s your family’ mentality and how, just like harmful drugs, it is toxic not only to the individuals trying to recover and heal, but also to society as a whole.

❤ With all the Love, Grace, and hopes for a Better, Brighter, Happier and Healthier tomorrow, as well as to Your Health & Wellness, Happiness, and Well-being. ❤
