TBT: Kate Middleton’s Birthday Portraits and Their Symbolism
Today we are taking it back to Kate Middleton’s 40th birthday portrait and its symbolism.
On January 9th, the Princess of Wales turned 42. The palace took to social media to share a new photo of the Princess at the coronation of King Charles III.

But today, we are taking it back to when the Princess turned 40, and the world got not one, but three new portraits of her. All three photos were taken by italian photographer Paolo Roversi. In the first portrait, she is wearing a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress, with earrings belonging to Princess Diana. This photo that is void of color is a call to focus on Catherine. The Catherine that is entering her 40’s, ready to take on more responsibilities. With the royal family, everything is intentional. The choice to showcase her wedding ring symbolizes her commitment to Prince William and their family. The choice to wear earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana, acknowledges the impact that Diana had as a woman in the monarchy, but also the impact she had on Catherine’s own life, being the mother to Prince William. In this portrait, Catherine is embracing everything we think of when we think Princess.

Some speculate that the photo above was intentionally posed to look like the 1864 portrait of Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Princess Alexandra would become Princess of Wales, and eventually Queen consort. The Princess of Wales title is a title that Catherine now holds, and when Prince William becomes King, she will be a Queen consort.

The next photo, is the same sepia tones as the first. But instead of the regal pose, the Princess is smiling towards the camera.

The third portrait is in a red off-shoulder, Alexander McQueen dress. If you haven’t notice, one of Catherine’s go-to designers is Alexander McQueen, who actually designed her famous wedding dress. This dress is well fitted, but the loose fabric make the Princess appear relaxed, almost in action. Red is symbolically a royal color, so it makes sense the royal would be in red. The earring that is visible to the audience belonged to Queen Elizabeth II. By wearing her earrings, she is honoring the Queen, who at the time these portraits were taken, was alive. Looking back, wearing a piece of jewelry is a beautiful way to honor two important royal women — the Queen and Princess Diana.
