Tao Te Ching: A Start
Everything you need to know & understand about this volume to appreciate it!
An Introduction
If you have or have not heard about this book. This article is for you.
The Tao Te Ching is one of the most widely translated classics of all time. It is considered to be the most important book in Taoism. A book that many would refer as a book of wisdom and about the truest way to see reality.
Like any other ancient text, there does come with it some controversy. Mainly over the history of the book & the author, Lao Tzu. Not much is known over the origin of the book. Mainly being dated back to the sixth century B.C., on the accounts of a meeting between Confucious and Lao Tzu. Of course, this meeting itself is seen as somewhat doubtful. Although, most modern scholars agree that the Tao Te Ching emerged in the late fourth century or early third century, about 2,500 years ago.
Fun fact. stone tablets dated to 300 B.C. have been found with parts of the Tao Te Ching text. This time period being known as the “Hundred Schools of Thought”. During this time, many different philosophies having emerged such as Confucianism, Legalism, and Mohism.
About the author of this beautiful work not much is known as well. The name “Lao Tzu” was not his actual name. More a title out of respect. “Lao” means old, and “Tzu” meaning master. About the authors life, very little was ever recorded. Although he is mentioned in some scrolls that date back to 400 B.C. Many believe his existence to be more legend.
With claims of Lao Tzu living to more than 200 years of age. Other legends claim that he was born with white hair or was the product of a virgin birth, conceived when his mother gazed upon a falling star. He supposedly remained in her womb for 62 years before being born while his mother was leaning against a plum tree!
According to Taoist tradition, Lao Tzu was an archivist who worked in the imperial library of the Zhou Dynasty Court. Being here where he met a young Confucious. There being many beautiful stories of their interactions on the basic tenets of Confucian ideals & philosophy. Later in the story, being where Lao Tzu resigned from his profession. Traveling to the west on a water buffalo to reach the desert. Here, Lao Tzu meets a guard, who asks the ancient master to write down his teachings before he leaves. Having never written down his teachings before. Lao Tzu writes down 5,000 characters & 81 chapters. What we now come to understand as the Tao Te Ching. The old master never to be seen again.
Here is a simple history of the book & author. I strongly encourage you to read more! As it is fascinating for lovers of the book but also history fanatics and “Taoist”. With claims of supposedly being a group of Taoist poets who created the legendary figure “Lao Tzu” to make the text seem more mystical and thus becoming more appealing to readers. So much legend & wisdom that comes with this book.
As for translations in English the simplest Translation & one used most is the translation by Stephen Mitchell. Already incorporating interpretations from the author. If you would like to read the more “raw” version then my favorite copy is that by Yi-Ping Ong.
Let me know what else y’all think I should add to this. Any other important pieces I missed. Please let me know! Hope you enjoyed!
