Taking The Path Of Least Resistance
How to live with more ease.

“There is no need to use force. Instead, create a path of least resistance, and gravity will do the rest.” ― Michael Dunlap
Yesterday I learned some powerful lessons about life from my son while swimming with him at our local pool. He taught me the power of taking the path of least resistance whenever you can.
He has always loved the water.
I, on the other hand, have a deep fear of it.
My son can float so well it looks like he is in an armchair. He dives into the water with fishlike abilities. I marvel at the ease of his movements every time I see him swim.
As we watched some people dive into the deep water from the platform, he was in awe. He told me he would do that one day. I have no doubts. His confidence and trust in life are amazing.
Here are the three lessons I learned from my son about taking the path of ease in life.
Trust In Life:
Yesterday my son showed me how easily he could float on his back. He trusts the water to hold him gently, and he lets go of any control.
I try to do this, and my mind gets in the way.
I overthink about trying to lean back, and then my fear of the water takes hold. If I can learn to trust in the water and in life to carry me, I can float too.
Watching my son float yesterday was powerful because it taught me that we often overthink everything. If we can just let go and trust, life will allow us to glide along.
How can you trust in life to carry you?
Do Not Take Yourself Too Seriously:
We played a fun game where my son gave me ten seconds to tell him a move to do in the pool.
It was fun to let go of any expectations and come up with silly ways to have fun in the water.
I told him to do barrel rolls, handstands, somersaults, and more in the water. He had a blast! The sillier the request, the more fun he had.
Often in life, we take ourselves too seriously and do not allow for enough fun. We can challenge ourselves in fun ways to be creative each day.

Take The Path of Ease:
When it was time to leave the pool, we had to find a way up and out of our lane.
Not every lane has a ladder.
I ended up hoisting myself up onto the edge of the pool and out of the water. It was not an easy way to exit the pool.
My son tried to do the same, but he was too far down to reach up properly. I attempted to pull him up, to no avail.
He decided to take an easier route.
He swam under the lane dividers and found a ladder to use. Brilliant! He had found the path of least resistance and easily got out of the pool.
Sometimes we take a more complicated path just because we think it is the only one available to us. That is what happened to me. I did not think it was possible to cross the lanes.
Watching my son find the solution was amazing.
