Take Your Power Back

Don’t allow others to dictate how you feel

We can’t control the world around us, and it is inevitable that we will encounter things that cause us pain or are downright irritating, but we can control how we respond to these situations.

In life, pain is unavoidable, things happen whether we like it or not. However, suffering is avoidable.

Pain and suffering are not the same things. Pain is the incident itself. Suffering is the way we torment ourselves after, causing us to revisit our pain time and time again, rather than trying to find a way to work through it.

That is not to say we shouldn’t honour our emotions and feel the feels of what we are going through.

We should express our emotions; in fact, it is incredibly healthy to do so. However, being stuck on what ails us and not allowing ourselves to move forward is where this becomes a problem.

When we feel the initial hurt, anger, or annoyance, our reaction is automatic. We feel the emotion before we even have time to think about reacting. It’s normal to feel emotions on the negative side of the spectrum when we do encounter a negative situation.

Giving away your power

Sometimes we do need to check ourselves too and ask ourselves whether we also respond in an intensely negative way over things that are just not that bad.

While there are certain scenarios that will bring up intense pain and anger, there are situations that don’t call for it at all, yet they still bring up these same feelings and they end up taking up more mental energy than they are worth.

For instance, someone cutting you off in traffic is nowhere near as bad as a fallout with your best friend.

Both of these situations shouldn’t really bring up the same intense emotions or take up the same amount of mental energy, yet many of us are prone to giving both situations the same amount of energy, even though we know a falling out with our best friend, someone who we truly care about; is much more important than a random person you’ve never met cutting you off in traffic.

It’s at times like this that we need to catch ourselves and realise that if we are giving the same volume of energy to every little annoyance we will never be at peace.

We give our power away when we do this.

We are essentially allowing others to control our emotions. We give others the power to dictate whether we have a good day or not.

This is one of the most disempowering things you can do to yourself.

You put your fate in the hands of others and relinquish all control and this is no way to live.

No one is in control of your emotional state other than yourself.

It shouldn’t take encounters with others to dictate how you feel and what you will be thinking about all day.

That’s why it is so important to identify what things are worth your mental energy and what things aren’t.

Taking back your power

The people you care for are important; therefore it is natural that anything related to them will bear greater weight.

However, the smaller inconveniences and encounters with people who don’t mean anything to you, are just not worth wasting an excessive amount of mental energy.

Being an overly reactive person means that it doesn’t take a lot to send you over the edge, so it’ll take practice and patience to be able to stop giving your power away to those who don’t deserve it, but it is doable.

You just have to know what is worth your mental energy and what isn’t and to be honest you will find that most of the annoyances we face on a daily basis are just not worth it.

Cultivate awareness

Whenever you catch yourself giving far too much energy to something small, it’s time to remind yourself of how you are doing yourself a disservice by dwelling on this.

You are giving your power away as you do this. You are allowing something external to take control of you.

There is hope though and you can turn the tables around and take control of the situation by switching gears in your brain and bringing focus to something else, ideally something more positive.

Switching from being controlled to taking control is empowering. You don’t allow anything to drain your energy and you raise your vibration by focusing on something more positive. This in turn will attract further positivity into your life.

Awareness is key, and you have to notice when you feel yourself spiraling. You need to ask yourself whether this is something that is worth it and if it isn’t; change the channel in your brain and take your power back.
