Take the Stairs: Elevate your Fitness to a New Level

I recently became a father. During the first few months, finding time for the gym or a run was virtually impossible. Luckily, we live on the 16th floor of our apartment complex, and every chance I got, I took the stairs. During those first few months, my trips up the stairs were my only workout. This helped me maintain my general fitness level.

Can you think of any activities in your life that you avoid out of convenience that would increase your overall activity levels?

I want to discuss the importance of general activity in our overall health and fitness plans. If we go to the gym for 2 hours 3 days a week and lay on the couch the other 162 hours of the week, we shouldn’t be surprised when we fail to reach our goals.

Being active in everyday routines plays a larger role in our weight management than our gym routine.

Are you a gym-goer? What are some daily activities you do that increase your overall movement?

I want to discuss the benefits of general activity and their importance and provide you with some actionable steps to increase your activity levels so that you can live a better, healthier life.

Benefits of General Activity

The benefits of General Activity can be divided into two areas: Physical and Mental.

Physical Benefits:

Improved Cardiovascular Health: Slightly elevated heart rates strengthen the heart’s ability to pump blood. It also maintains the flexibility of the blood vessels and arteries. This increases our cardiovascular ability.

Do you track your resting heart rate? Have you noticed a lower resting heart rate when you are very active during the day prior?

Enhanced Flexibility: General activity, such as yard work, gardening, and housework, requires us to move in less predictable ways. Doing this while our hearts are at a slightly elevated BPM is an excellent form of stretching. This will increase our overall fitness and prevent injuries. I have tight hamstrings; I am always trying to increase their flexibility.

Do you have any areas of your body that you would like to increase flexibility in?

Burn More Fat: When we operate our bodies in an aerobic capacity, meaning we do not exceed our body’s ability to use oxygen at the cellular level, we burn fat. Converting fat to energy requires more steps at the cellular level but is much cleaner. Daily activity is the best way to consistently and slowly burn off unwanted body fat.

Have you ever had a very active week, perhaps when you were traveling or moving, and noticed you lost some weight? Please share.

Mental Benefits:

Stress Reduction: Our modern world is not doing us any favors when it comes to reducing stress. Rush hour, blue light, unpleasant coworkers, and convenience food often leave us stressed out in ways we may not even realize.

Calming the sympathetic nervous system is crucial to aid in digestion and reduce overall inflammation. Increasing calming activities or activities that bring us joy, such as gardening, playing with our children, or hiking, can really help calm our nerves.

Are there any activities that bring you joy? Please share.

Boosting Self-Esteem: When I clean my kitchen, I feel much better. Waking up in the morning and going into the kitchen to get my morning coffee feels much better than when it’s still dirty from the night before.

Consistently accomplishing tasks like this helps us develop confidence in our ability to manage our adult lives.

Feel free to share any general activities you do that help increase your personal confidence.

Mindfulness: The venerable Thich Nhat Hanh often spoke of the joys of washing dishes. He would go into elaborate explanations of how rewarding the warmth of the water, the feeling of the bubbles, and the satisfaction of watching something go from dirty to clean were.

Washing dishes is a great source of joy and a way to bring me into the present moment. Other activities like gardening and playing with my son have the same effect.

Have you ever stopped during an activity to just recognize the moment you are in and how complex and beautiful it is?

Types of General Activity and Their Benefits:

Walking: I walk everywhere. My wife sent me out for some lemon and ginger yesterday and wondered why it took me so long. I walked to the store.

Increase the number of steps you take, and it will pay dividends towards your health and fitness goals.

Housework: I wash the dishes and clean the kitchen every day. As a trained chef, I am no stranger to the level of work required to keep a kitchen clean. It is a physically demanding task.

Every night, I put a podcast in my ear and clean my kitchen. This adds a few hundred steps, 45 minutes more of standing, and numerous squats and back bends to load the dishes and sweep the floor.

Gardening: I miss having a garden. Living in an apartment is nice, but I was a proud member of the dirty fingernails club for most of my adult life.

Gardening is an excellent way to increase your activity level, reduce stress, and gain a sense of satisfaction and pride when you see the fruits of your labor.

Yard Work: When shopping for a new lawnmower, and you’re debating between the expensive zero-turn or the self-propelled push mower, give the push mower a second glance.

Walking behind the push mower, slinging around a weed eater, and raking leaves are all excellent ways to increase your overall physical activity and give you those moments of pride for having the best yard on the block.

Playing with Kids: I am a preschool teacher. I never planned that; it’s funny how life happens. One thing I can attest to after a year of working with 3–4-year-olds is that they never get tired. Well, they do, but that’s what nap time is for.

Playing with them throughout the day is excellent physical activity, and they are a joy to be around. Kids are great; they are all surface, no toxic adult baggage.

If you have your own kids, make it a point to be more active with them. Play catch, frisbee golf, football, or just hide and seek.

This is just a short list of examples of things you can do to increase your overall activity levels.

Please feel free to share your unique activities that increase your daily activity level.

Mine, as I mentioned in my opening paragraph, is taking the stairs. I also ride a bicycle to work. It’s a 3-mile ride, so 6 miles round trip. Not exactly a vigorous cycling workout, but it’s 15 minutes of elevated heart rate every day. The more examples we give, the more chances we have to inspire someone to better themselves.

Thank you for reading this, and I hope that it can help inspire you to live a better, healthier life.
