Take the shots

A poem about self-discipline

You smile a tired smile Not because you’re drained But you did the things you needed to And things have slightly changed.

You’ll wake a little different You become the things you do And you did the things that matter To the slightly different you.

The exhaustion satisfies you The sense of victory A step in your new direction Away from history.

You’re ripping up the bonds Sawing through the chains Your will imposed upon yourself Enjoying your new game.

Write your rules and take the shots Or go back to where you started You’ll be someone else’s stepping stone And your dreams will have departed.
