Take away the sunsets

A poem for my mother

I’d beat the earth until it cried So the tears would make a river To bridge the space between our worlds,

I’d swim to where you are And have you dry my tears again.

I’d forget my education So I could once again be foolish And laugh a child’s laugh,

Unashamed and holy In your forgiving eyes.

I’d take away the sunsets And the comforts of the earth So sleep would never come,

And I had no place of solace But the space within your arms.

I’d call your name a thousand times So it might find your sleeping ears And make you rise to meet me,

I know you’d take away the shadows With your voice again.
