Come Have a Laugh and Check Out These 10 Hilarious Webcomics
Some of the funniest web cartoons and info about them
If you’re anything like me, you enjoy a good laugh or two to start the day — especially in the middle of all the depressing news lately.
That’s why webcomics were invented!
Funny drawings, great puns, and all from the ease of my iPhone? Sign me up! (Disclaimer: I have already, in fact, signed up.)
So let’s cut to the chase. Here are my 10 favorite webcomics I follow every week — and maybe you should too!
1. Strange Planet
Description: Who doesn’t love the idea of simply drawn blue aliens trying to live like humans while describing their behavior in extremely complex ways? This webcomic started a little over a year ago and has been shared more times than I can count.
Other Creations: He also created a Publishers Weekly best selling comic book back in 2014 called NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, unrelated to Strange Planet. A few months ago he released a book version of Strange Planet on Amazon.
Fun Facts: Strange Planet owes its fame to Instagram, as this was where the work first started to be shared. It spread like wildfire and had over 250,000 followers within 3 weeks!
Other Creations: They also sell a wide variety of items in their online shop, including shirts, mugs, greeting cards, and even have a playable card game that looks pretty fun for parties — probably not for the faint of heart though.
Fun Facts: Rob DenBleyker has repeatedly talked about his problems with getting banned from Facebook. He blames the newer algorithms and how the site shares his work. His theory is that the followers of his comics will share the work, and eventually people that don’t agree that his humor is ‘okay’ report it — enough of those reports and his pages get suspended/banned. Even after 6 years of repeated account openings, it doesn’t seem Facebook and C&H have found a resolution to this.
Description: First created in 2009, this webcomic quickly became famous across the web for its quirky drawings and long-form stories drawn in a cutesy manner. Sometimes showcasing short traditional comic strips, and sometimes displaying incredibly long deep dives into specific areas — this comic isn’t just for laughs. One of the most popular long-form comic examples was about the creator’s house burning down as a child — probably the only time a comic strip made my eyes watery. (But I’m sure that was just allergies.)
Other Creations: Matthew has released 8 books so far, usually collections of his comics all focused on one theme per book. He also has a store with tonnes of merchandise on The Oatmeal website, including his own card game!
Fun Facts: Matthew may be taking a 2-year hiatus from The Oatmeal as he just got signed on to develop an animated feature with Illumination Entertainment.
Description: A well-drawn series of semi-dark humorous comic strips that are always good for a chuckle. Many of them follow the setup, continue, surprise method of old-style comic strips like in the old days. Go with what works, right? (While adding a decent amount of dark humor to it)
Other Creations: The duo also creates video versions of their comics, which seems to be a new trend. One of the more neat aspects of their website is they made a choose-your-own-adventure style comic, go check it out!
Fun Facts: They raised $43,000 on Kickstarter to create a mobile game about a friendly chainsaw called Waynesaw — and released it!
Description: This laughable series often entails quirky situations — super-intelligent children, aliens, time travel, futuristic scenarios, etc. It’s good for a laugh in a what-would-happen-if kind of way.
Other Creations: Zach recently released a book on future technology that could either make or break us — and of course it’s animated in a humorous style. You can check it out here. He also created Captain Stupendous with artist Chris Jones, and Snowflakes withJames Ashby and Chris Jones.
Fun Facts: The creator has post-secondary education in both English and physics.
Description: This fantastically dark comic has been around technically since 2001! IT’s famous for it’s art style as well as the shock factor of the final panels in each strip. Every cartoon is in a seemingly innocent scenario with an often shocking bit of surreal humor at the end. Love it.
Other Creations: Nicholas also released book versions of the comic strip including The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack, a 256-page piece of work.
Fun Facts: In 2018, Nicholas raised just over $100,000 on Kickstarter to fund a book called A Little Death. The cover of the book is a bit reminiscent of Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas — although if the humor is anything similar to The Perry Bible Fellowship — this one won’t be for kids. It doesn’t appear to have been released yet, but magic takes time to create, after all.
Description: Do you like cats and business and laughing your butt off? Well, then this comic might be the one for you. A perfect capture of cats’ weird behaviors but set in the world of business — definitely a load of laughs for anyone that can relate.
Description: If you’re in the mood for a quick chuckle at self-defeatest, absurdist, or satirical kind of humor, then you’re in luck with Poorly Drawn Lines.
Description: This webcomic combines hilarious twists with cute drawings for a one-two punch. Reddit seems to be particularly fond of taking some of the drawings and turning them into meme’s (ex. the above picture with different political associations).
