TAG’s tips for travel no.13: The Rum Is Only Gone If You Drink It All

When it comes to travel, I think we can all learn a lesson from Captain Jack Sparrow: THE RUM IS ONLY GONE IF YOU DRINK IT ALL.

This tip is for those of us who drink alcohol. One of the fabulous experiences you can have in a new place is indulging in the local cuisine and bevvies. Food is a beautiful connector of humans and this includes drinks, both alcoholic and non.

I love to have a tipple or a toddy when I’m traveling. Not only do many local specialties come with tours, tastings, storytelling and other learning experiences, but it makes any meal feel like a celebration and takes a tiny bit of the edge off of a long day of locomotion. There is a very specific danger, however, to drinking ALL of the rum.

This anxious girl doesn’t have to tell you the consequences of drinking too much. But I can tell you that drinking too much in a city or venue you don’t know can piddle rain on your already anxious travel parade. Oh, your night may go swimmingly and you may get back to your accommodation in one piece. Later and tomorrow is another story entirely.

Have fun, Y’all. The first rule of having fun is to have it. But maybe, just maybe, save some rum for next time. Or whiskey. Or wine. Or tequila. Or beer. Be assured that one or two extra bevvies will leave you looking toward a not-so-sunny sunrise.

That being said if you know you are going to drink STAY HYDRATED. Take it slow. Eat before AND during your liquid treat. And then stop BEFORE you drop. Or don’t. But calculate what you’re in for either way and be confident in your decision to stand or sway.

Your plans tomorrow depend on your decisions tonight. Choose your favorite choice! Or choose both by having that tasty tipple and saving the next drink for your future, more rested, traveling you.

Big Love & Happy Travels,
