Synopsis for THE OMEGA CONSPIRACY
The novel begins with the introduction of Jonathan Margolis to Dr. Carmichael after he throws a fit at a pool on a class field trip and is taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he encounters Dr. Eldin Carmichael.
Dr. Carmichael discovers through the drawings that Jonathan has brought with him that Jonathan can see the future and may have other special abilities.
Then, three interweaved stories are told in tandem
Frank Glen’s story is about an archaeological dig in Iraq in 2001 with Sir Edward Lancaster and his daughter Stephanie. Frank is joined by a metallurgist named Dr. Maxwell Matheson. They begin to explore the mysteries of the site, among them ancient artifacts, possible ancient technology, and mysterious magical spheres.
The second story continues Jim Jacobson’s and Julie Jamison’s story from the VISIONARY novel. Jim has been released from the rehab hospital in New York after recovering from the gunshot wound to his head he experienced at the end of Visionary. She is driving him from New York City back to Hadleyburg, Virginia. She is now Frank Glen’s supervisor at ‘Newsmaker’ magazine.
The third story is about Walter Bartholomew, the retired FBI agent who handled the FBI kidnapping investigation for Michael Fox, recounted in the VISIONARY novel. He receives an anonymous package at his retirement home in Woodstock, New York, asking him to come to Hadleyburg and talk to Jim Jacobson. He decides to drive to Hadleyburg to find out what it means. First, he goes to New York to talk to his son, Jack, who has taken his place at the FBI offices in Manhattan. Jack insists that he join his father on his father’s road trip to Virginia, even though he is in the middle of the Mathias Wilson assassination investigation continuing from the VISIONARY novel.
Each of these three stories is told in juxtaposition to one another as the novel progresses.
As they drive toward Virginia, Jim begins to exhibit a growing paranoia as he starts to voice his suspicions that they are being followed by someone else.
Stephanie begins to show Frank Glen and Matheson the secrets of the archaeological site. Frank and Matheson become acquainted. Matheson explains his expertise as a metallurgist and some of the extraordinary discoveries he has cataloged.
Jack and his father begin their trip to Virginia. There is discussion about what they are going to do when they arrive in Virginia. Walter Bartholomew suggests they pretend to be tourists coming to see the local William Hadley UFO museum.
When Jim and Julie arrive in Hadleyburg, they are met by Burgess Kingman. Burgess asks him to go with him to see the MacGyver Estate to confront MacGyver and write a story about him. MacGyver, who is 96 years old, is about to lose his property, the former William Hadley estate, to the county, who want to turn it into a sewage processing plant. They drive out to the estate and are confronted by MacGyver with a shotgun. Two federal agents also confront Jim, Julie, and Burgess, and then MacGyver captures the agents and takes the agents into his house as prisoners. Once in the house, MacGyver gives Jim an additional cassette tape, which Nigel had left with MacGyver before he died. They all listen to Nigel’s tape. Jim discovers that his adopted father, Thomas Jacobson, was intimately involved in his kidnapping. Julie’s father was also intimately involved. She doesn’t want to believe it. They discover an OMEGA Video Club DVD, which Burgess claims is a front for an intelligence group. Burgess attempts to find encrypted data on an OMEGA Video DVD. (Later, Walter has a former FBI agent and friend, Donald La Greche, come to Hadleyburg to examine the DVD. La Greche is unable to find any data. He is later murdered by a crooked police officer who drives La Greche’s car into Lake Gibraltar)
Walter and Jack arrive in Hadleyburg. Walter insists they go first to the museum. Once there Walter discovers William Hadley’s notebooks, he reads one of the notebooks. He asks the curator to open the display so he can read more. He asks about who he can talk to about the notebooks, and the curator tells him to talk to MacGyver, who set up the museum in 1941. Walter and Jack go out to the MacGyver estate to talk to MacGyver about the notebooks. When they arrive at the MacGyver estate, Jack discovers that William Hadley had written about Jack in one of the notebooks and had also left a letter for Jack to read when he finally arrived. MacGyver gives Jack the letter. Federal agents raid the MacGyver estate and take everyone prisoner. They are all taken to the Hadleyburg Police Headquarters for further questioning. Jack and his father are released.
A fourth storyline begins about Liam McShane discovering a Brotherhood of the Knights of St. George document from VISIONARY in a trash heap near his job in Manhattan. This is the same document which Jim has stolen from him in VISIONARY by the mugger who shot him. Liam goes first to his former professor from NYU Malcom Crawford to speak to him about the document. Crawford tells him to speak to Mark Ryan, a conspiracy writer, about the document. Liam talks to Mark Ryan who makes a copy of the document. Mark Ryan suggests they go to Hadleyburg to speak to Jacobson themselves. Liam’s friend and co-worker Max Goldman takes Liam to the Empire State Building to see the Brotherhood offices. Max’s ex-girlfriend Lisa works in the same building and joins them in their quest. Mark Ryan, Liam and Lisa, fly together to Virginia, all of them arriving just in time for Hadleyburg’s annual strawberry festival.
Air Force One is shot down over the Atlantic and the president is missing. Government officials are blaming OMEGA for the attack.
Chapter 22 interlude where Peter Margolis, Jonathan’s father, takes Jonathan to see Dr. Carmichael for a checkup. Jonathan draws an OMEGA for Dr. Carmichael.
Stephanie takes Frank Glen and Dr. Matheson into a mine that she and her father have discovered in the deserts of Iraq. In the mine hundreds of metal spheres which have unique properties have been discovered. An Iraqi Ministry of Antiquities official shows up to inspect the site. James Jamison, Julie’s father shows up to inspect the site. Matheson tells Frank he is part of a secret group called OMEGA. The site is bombed and destroyed by NATO, killing Sir Richard Lancaster and James Jamison among others. The Iraqis take Stephanie, Matheson and Frank Glen into custody. Matheson is tortured by the Iraqis.
Agent Andrinopoulos questions Julie and Jim about OMEGA. Burgess has disappeared. Jim’s father, Thomas Jacobson, arrives in Hadleyburg. Thomas denies any involvement in the kidnapping. Jim doesn’t believe him. After intense questioning, Jim and Julie are finally released by the police. They all go to the strawberry festival. There is a magic show with two masked figures. The magic show ends with a mind-reading act. At the end of the act, the magician removes his mask and reveals that he is Nigel, still alive. Nigel disappears. The assistant is taken into custody by police. He turns out to be Burgess Kingman. MacGyver shows up and takes them all into a tunnel to another mine with artifacts and spheres just like the mine in Iraq. It lies beneath the William Hadley Estate.
Flashback to Nigel seeing La Greche driven into Lake Gibraltar. Nigel goes into the car and rescues La Greche who appears dead. But to Nigel’s surprise, La Greche revives and Nigel realizes he has the power to heal.
Frank Glen, Stephanie, and Matheson arrive at London airport where Matheson is shot by an assassin at the airport. A cardiac surgeon arriving at the same time saves Matheson’s life.
Walter Agamemnon McAllister, a geologist and infamous computer hacker, is given one of the spheres from Iraq to examine.
The novel ends with everyone at the site of William Hadley’s observatory ruins. Liam McShane, Lisa and Mark Ryan arrive, as well as Malcolm Crawford, Liam’s NYU professor. Liam discovers that the clocks in Hadleyburg have been shifting backwards eleven minutes, a phenomenon which has also been occurring elsewhere. What time is it?
