Summary

The text is a satirical take on the choice to remain sober on New Year's Eve, contrasting the typical drunken revelry with the perceived boredom of sobriety.

Abstract

The article titled "Sympathy For Those Who Choose to Remain Sober" humorously reflects on the uncommon decision to abstain from alcohol on New Year's Eve. It describes the usual festivities involving excessive drinking, loss of inhibitions, and the sharing of secrets, leading to hangovers and forgotten resolutions. The author expresses mock sympathy for those who miss out on such "joys," questioning how they endure the "boredom" of clear-headedness and healthy fun. Despite the satirical tone, the piece concludes with genuine well-wishes for good health and enjoyment during the holidays.

Opinions

  • The author feigns pity for those who choose not to drink on New Year's Eve, implying that their experience is less enjoyable.
  • There is a clear contrast drawn between the wild behavior of those who drink excessively and the presumably more subdued behavior of sober individuals.
  • The text suggests that the common New Year's Eve traditions include excessive alcohol consumption, which leads to a lack of common sense and potential regret.
  • The author seems to critique the superficiality of New Year's resolutions, which are proclaimed while hungover and quickly forgotten.
  • The piece ends with a touch of irony, offering good health and good times as a wish for the holidays, which contrasts with the behaviors described earlier.

Sympathy For Those Who Choose to Remain Sober

A satirical rhyme for New Year’s Eve

A rarity on New Year’s Eve and rousing some surprise are they who don’t see midnight through intoxicated eyes.

Oh the glee and merriment they woefully must miss: slurring words and stumbling, not caring whom they kiss.

Imbibing zany cocktails till common sense is drowned. Champagne toasts at twelve o’clock then pour another round!

Blabbing taboo secrets and regretting what was said. Performing gawky groping before passing out in bed.

Waking up hungover and proclaiming with a jeer the same old resolution fast forgotten every year.

Oh the sorrow it must bring to miss the joys of drinking. How do they bear the boredom of healthy fun and thinking?

Best wishes to all for good health and good times during your holiday celebrations.
