Sylvia and Ramon
And their perfect love
They were so happy. They had no idea how doomed they were, which was a good thing. If they knew they certainly would not have been able to be happy.
Some people wish they could see and predict the future. Luckily, there is a part of the human brain that usually prevents that. It’s the part that keeps us bound to the concept of linear time.
But when one is fully immersed in the NOW one can transcend linear time.
Sylvia and Ramon were not only fully immersed in the NOW but also fully immersed in each other. The rest of the world seemed to have disappeared. They had gone beyond being in love. They had gone beyond being lovers. They had become one.
Walking merrily hand-in-hand down the beach one warm summer day, Ramon was suddenly overcome with a feeling of dread. Looking around him, he was shocked to see that it was snowing. Shaking his head, the snow disappeared.
“What’s the matter?”
“Oh… uh… it’s nothing, Sylvia. I just had a weird feeling… And for a second there I thought it was snowing.”
“Snowing?” Sylvia laughed.
Ramon laughed, too, putting the incident immediately behind him.
For the next several months their love continued unabated. While they remained in their own perfect world, two more times Ramon experienced the same thing he did back on the beach. He was overcome with a brief feeling of dread as he saw it snowing — even though it was not really snowing at the time. The intensity of the dread seemed to magnify with each new experience and it became harder to dismiss.
The second time Ramon had this experience he and Sylvia were walking through a pumpkin patch giggling and looking for the perfect pumpkin to cut. It was a pleasantly sunny day.
The third time occurred in early December. It was very cold outside but Sylvia and Ramon were snuggly warm inside their apartment. They were sitting on their couch sipping wine and making Christmas plans.
Ramon suggested that they take off the week after Christmas and fly down to Cancun. Sylvia suggested that they instead go up into the mountains and spend the week skiing.
The second she said, ‘skiing,’ Ramon was overcome with that same feeling of dread and for a brief moment he could see snow falling. He could not shake it so easily this time, “Uh… I don’t know.”
“A Christmas ski trip has always been sort of a tradition in my family. I’ve spent the week after Christmas skiing so many times. It seems so natural. Besides, we’ve had so many adventures but skiing is the one thing we haven’t done together yet.”
Ramon excused himself to go to the bathroom where he splashed cold water on his face. Why was this happening to him?
Back at the couch he agreed to go on the ski trip.
The week after Christmas was spent atop a mountain skiing. When they were not skiing the slopes they were in their cabin making love. Their love was never stronger. They had so much fun. Everything was perfect.
After packing their car and heading down the mountain it began snowing. The snowflakes were big and fat and began falling so heavily that visibility was reduced to mere feet. They never saw the truck coming.
Sylvia and Ramon never made it off the mountain. While their lives ended, their perfect love kept going, surely to bring them together again in some future NOW.
