Sustainable tips for your summer holidays

The holiday season is well and truly underway and it is important to remember to be sustainable. Here are five tips on how to do just that throughout your holidays:
1. Summertime is upon us. Take advantage of the warm weather and rather than driving short distances like to your cafe or supermarket, include some daily exercise in the sunshine by walking or riding a bike instead. This does much more than people actually realise, as it reduces our vehicle emissions — thereby minimising your carbon footprint.

2. Australian’s are known for their love of coffee. Each year we use approximately ‘1 billion disposable coffee cups — which is equivalent to 2,700,000 paper coffee cups being thrown out each day.’ Before you grab your next coffee, purchase a reusable keep-cup, and you will be helping save our planet and protect our wildlife.

3. Hydration is essential in the summer holidays. With that in mind, it is important to make sure we have our own reusable drink bottle so that we don’t have to keep purchasing plastic ones — thereby increasing plastic pollution. The best way to do this is to go grab an insulated bottle as they are not only environmentally friendly, but also keep your water cold on a warm summer day. By using our own drink bottle and not single-use ones, you will be directly helping put a stop to plastic pollution.

4. The summer holidays are full of warm weather and sunshine. Don’t waste this limited opportunity. Make your new summer project installing a veggie patch in your backyard to source your own delicious food. By doing this, you are reducing some of the transportation involved in your food consumption; as well as limiting the pollution to our environment and waterways by being the one who decides which chemicals go into your soil and onto your plants.

5. During the holidays, we all love shopping. Australians use a shocking 4 billion plastic bags each year (10 million each day). Instead of contributing to the issue, please remember to bring your own reusable bag to avoid using single-use bags. This will help reduce our planet’s plastic pollution.
