Susan Brearley: Biography
Who Am I?

Born in 1957 in Reading, Pennsylvania, I spent my first 19 years in provincial obscurity, immersed in books and language, as a way to escape the mundane.
In 1978, with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts: Humanities, and a small scholarship to Pace University in New York, I was armed with what I believed to be the golden ticket to Wonka World, and left Pennsylvania behind.
New York is bigger than a farm trained girl can ever imagine.
Reality hit hard. I needed a job. Gannett Group didn’t believe that “editor of the college newspaper” was a sufficient enough qualification for a position as a journalist, even if it was for the Gerbil News.
So, with a toddler in tow, it was off to the working world for me.
After a series of interesting minimum wage jobs, I landed an entry position at IBM.
The men in levels above me used to brag that they started at the bottom and worked their way up. By that, they meant the mail room.
I got news — the lowest position in IBM was receptionist, a few rungs below mail room. It was I who started at the bottom and worked my way up.
I served with IBM for 27 years — receptionist, secretary, programmer, systems engineer, sales rep, marketing, assorted staff positions and mediation, working with lawyers. Lots of stories to be told there. I’ll get to them eventually.
When I left IBM, I took all my savings and started a business. That has kept me alive for the last 15 years. It hasn’t been easy, and there are stories there as well. I’ve already started to tell some of them.
I’ve been a mother for 40 years. This past year I’ve been trying to remember what I wanted to do before all the IBM and motherhood happened. Then, through working with Julia Cameron’s book, “It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again”, based on her wildly popular “The Artist’s Way” but re-imagined and rewritten for those in or facing retirement, I remembered — I wanted to write.
I was introduced to Medium by a friend in 2016. There was no MPP then. I was just experimenting, and not really seriously studying. 2019 has been a breakout year for me, even if not financially.
In 2019, I’ve secured my US Sailing membership and Basic Keelboat Certification. I’ve taken two 10 day summits — one in Neuroscience and one in Understanding Narcissism. I was blessed to study with the Teyuna elders from South America for a week. I started seriously meditating daily. I founded a program called VisionQuest which is a transformational program designed to teach people of all ages how to actively create the life of their dreams, by breaking through social and personal imaginary constructs.
I have plans to complete a certification in Neurosculpting in 2020.
By day, I manage AirBnB homes to actually pay the bills.
I began this year with a goal to read 200 books a year. This will be a goal I will set every year, for the rest of my life.
I also cannot imagine a single day going by without meditating, for the rest of my life.
I have written one book, in the 1990’s about surviving a breast cancer that the medical profession told me would kill me within a year. That was in 1995.
I am working on my second, and I have a third planned as soon as the second is complete. It is through working with Shaunta Grimes and her programs that I have been able to progress with my plans.
I am a happy student/mentee of Michael Simmons programs. There are initiatives that I have started this year directly because of my involvement with his Mental Model program.
Also, recently started the AMP program run by Benjamin Hardy, PhD.
It is through Medium that I have found renewed direction and focus in this phase of my life. Writing brings me joy. Reading and meditating bring me focus.
I write and read daily now. I am the owner of and manage four publications here on Medium — MuddyUm, Law of Connections, To The Summit, and Contemplate.
Thanks to Janie Emaus, who introduced me to the Erma Bombeck workshop that brings together comedy writers. That also led me to Scott Dikkers’ Comedy Business School, which I am enrolled in.
I am currently also working on a certification in Neurosculpting. I’m sure more certifications are following that one.
Thanks to all the great writers I am surrounded by each and every day. I feel so blessed to be a part of this community. It really feels like home to me.
I wish all the best for everyone here at Medium. I cannot sing its praises loudly enough. Today, the opportunities appear to be endless.
From my Inner MBA program:

Thank you to Celine Lai for creating this publication, and for patiently waiting for my biography, as well as patiently creating helpful tutorials to encourage participation.
Just for the record, I hate LinkedIn.
