Opinions

  • The article criticizes the majority alliance for underestimating Noura's emotional response to being excluded from the family reward, leading to her memorable freak-out.
  • Tommy is considered a likely winner due to his consistent edit and the portrayal of his gameplay, though the author is hesitant to confirm this due to discussions about a potential female winner.
  • Lauren's gameplay and her comments about Elaine's intelligence are viewed negatively, suggesting that Lauren may be in a vulnerable position despite winning immunity.
  • The author appreciates the character development and personal growth Karishma experienced throughout the season, expressing hope for her potential return to the game.
  • The recap concludes with a somewhat pessimistic outlook on the season's endgame, predicting a predictable finale with Tommy, Noura, and Dan, but finds solace in the ongoing entertainment provided by Noura and Dean.
  • A final negative opinion is expressed towards Dan for his unsportsmanlike celebration after Karishma's elimination.

Survivor: Island of the Idols Episode 12 Recap

Just Go For it

Today is a day of mourning. We have lost Lady Karishma, queen of Seinfeld references and correct idol plays. This world is not fair or just, as this season has already proven multiple times. We can only move forward with the hope that someone worthy will avenge Karishma’s demise… although it’s looking more and more like Tommy of House Vanilla is going to take home the crown.

In an indirect manner, we can trace Karishma’s boot back to Dean. They had finally gotten on the same page after spending the entire pre-merge going after each other. Tossed at the bottom together, they saw past their differences and agreed to work together. Dean was so convinced of Karishma’s trustworthiness that he didn’t even waver about her. It was a beautiful journey for both of them.

And then, Dean’s weariness of a certain other ally caused everything to crumble. If Dean doesn’t say anything to Tommy at that tribal council, Noura doesn’t go off on a tangent, they blindside Tommy and the outcasts are running the game. We were this close to having such a good flip on the majority. I was living for it.

Still, I don’t think I can chastise Dean. We know that he was mostly worried about Noura. We also know that Elaine had an idol. If he didn’t think that Noura was going to vote with the newly minted 4-person crew and Elaine played the idol for herself, that meant only Karishma or Dean could receive eligible votes. All it takes is something screwy to happen at tribal and the vote could suddenly switch onto him.

Take for example if Noura really wasn’t going to vote with them. And at tribal, she decides to reveal the plan to the Vokai majority. Suddenly, the tables are flipped, and Dean is the one who looks untrustworthy in Tommy’s eyes. I think that was the major source of Dean’s uneasiness with Noura. She had too much information and is too volatile to carefully handle that information.

I honestly thought at first that this was a ploy from Dean, Karishma and Elaine. I thought that they were too paranoid to trust Noura and were trying to push her into flipping and convincing the Vokai alliance not to split the votes so that Elaine could correctly play her idol and they could safely idol out Tommy. As the argument went along, it became obvious that this was an improvisation from Dean and that everything was blowing up at tribal council.

You have to love Noura though. This could have quickly devolved in another tribal council of people playing telephone as Probst tries to helplessly narrate so that the audience doesn’t feel left out. Instead, Noura goes “fuck it, I’m going to speak the unspoken” and for a rare moment, tribal council was no longer just an act. You saw real conversations being had, out loud, much like the time Julie Rosenberg jumped ship in Edge of Extinction.

The whole scene was chaotic and fun. Which made the whole result feel much crappier in comparison. It’s like Boston Rob said: they went through all of this just to vote out Karishma? I understand that this was always a possible outcome from the vote, but it feels like we had all this talk only to end up back on square one.

Still, this was a great episode of Survivor. There were so many good character moments. Once again, Noura was the star. Her family visit was great because it doubled as both a grounded moment for Noura, showing her humanity and reminding us that she is still just a regular person even if she seems like a goddess, and still kept that zaniness that has become Noura’s brand.

In a lot of ways, I admire Noura. Last night we got to see that she has some self-awareness. She knows that she’s very intense and out there and she owns that. Noura isn’t scared to be herself, like truly 100% of the way herself. She makes no excuses about it. That hasn’t stopped her from being compassionate or a good person and it’s allowed her to maintain an authentic aura that not every Survivor can say they have.

I don’t know what her alliance was thinking not choosing Noura as one of the two players to share the reward with. They’ve spent over a month with Noura. They know she’s an emotional player. How did they think she was going to react when she wasn’t chosen for the most emotional reward of the season? By two of her supposed closest allies? Of course Noura was going to act out!

And act out she did! That was one of the best Survivor freak outs we’ve ever had. My favorite moment was when she said to Karishma’s face “I’m like the Vokai Karishma except I don’t suck and people love to be around me.”. That’s a paraphrase but we get the essence of the message. That’s vintage Noura, just telling Karishma she sucks without even realizing it.

Another great moment in the rant was Dean looking like he was about to doze off at one point. The more the season goes on, the more it’s become obvious that Dean is Noura’s best foil. From the moment she tried to recruit him to make a move against Jack and Jamal, they’ve been great sparing partners.

There was another great Dean and Noura moment in this episode. You know it’s bad for Noura when she is being corrected about split votes by the guy who suggested splitting the votes in front of an entire tribe but that’s what happened last night. I don’t know if Noura went to the Brad Culpepper school of mathematics, but she couldn’t understand why a group of 4 people couldn’t split the votes 3–1 against a 2–2 split. And then to top it off, when Noura asks if Dean is worried about Elaine and Karishma, he straight up tells her that he’s only worried about Noura. Bad gameplay but great entertainment.

I have nothing against Tommy. He seems like a perfectly nice, normal person. But if he wasn’t getting voted off this episode, I don’t see a time in the future where he will be picked off. His edit has been too good for too long to ignore at this point. I’m not ready to lock him in as the winner of this season, mostly because of the discourse about a woman winning the season, but I’d have him at like 90% certainty.

Especially when Lauren had some not so great content this episode. For the second time this season, she has been shown questioning Elaine’s intelligence. This time, she didn’t outright call her stupid, but she did say that Elaine wasn’t strategic enough to consider a rebellion. As a rebellion was being planned with Lauren as the main target of the coup. Coming off the back of an episode where she can supposedly read her entire tribe perfectly and misplayed an idol, I don’t like the looks of the story being told.

I think that if Lauren hadn’t won that immunity challenge, she would have been gone this episode. Another reason for Dean blowing the whistle could be that he was fine losing Lauren, with whom he had no allegiance, but was not yet willing to lose Tommy, who Dean considers an ally. Especially when you consider that Dean thinks of himself as a physical threat and in voting out Tommy, he would be voting out the biggest threat in front of him.

Like I said at the beginning, losing Karishma smarts. Still, it was nice to see her story come full circle before she got sent home. She had the chance to see her husband and confirm what she had realized while playing Survivor: she truly loved him. From her perspective, maybe Survivor will be the event that saves their marriage after it had been on the rocks. On top of that, Karishma got to see throughout this season how mentally tough she can be. Not a lot went right for her, but she never stopped trying to push that boulder up the hill. I think that she allowed herself to accept who she is and that it will work wonders for her development moving forward. I hope that we get a chance to see her play again with that day 32 confidence starting on day one.

At this point, I’m hoping to get an episode that will surprise me. I feel like the endgame is Tommy winning this season with Noura and Dan accompanying him to the end. It would really be an unexciting way to end this season and the winner would have been so obvious from the very beginning. We’ll see what next episode has in store for us. The good news is that we still have Noura and Dean left to bicker with each other so no matter what, not all will be lost.

P.S: Boston Powers was absolutely younger than 13. I know Probst wants to erase Shane from our collective memories but I don’t think replacing him in Survivor history with Dan is moving towards the positive.

P.P.S: Fuck Dan for that douchey celebration when Karishma was voted out. Ignorant-ass, clown-ass fool.
