Surfacing
A Poem

I am a blind cavefish
Swimming back and forth
Between the years
And through the chambers of your heart
I want so badly; the lifeblood passed unto your breath
The Rio Grande flows
Its swiftness a mystery
I am so lost in it
Lackluster and sightless
My world full of enemies
The expanse lingers
Unaware of day or night
Or if I suffocate
The deception that freedom awaits me
As the current throws its weight against my skin
Surfacing my only hope
