Summary

Superalgos has transitioned to a new token distribution model, where a fixed amount of up to 10M SA tokens will be distributed monthly starting November 1st, 2021, to streamline the process and enhance predictability.

Abstract

Superalgos has implemented a significant change in its token distribution strategy. Previously, the distribution of Superalgos (SA) tokens was linked to software releases, with each release receiving an arbitrary portion of the annual budget based on its perceived value to the project. This approach, while functional in the project's nascent stages, became less suitable as the project expanded and required a more structured and scalable system. To address this, the project has shifted to a monthly distribution schedule, which will see up to 10M SA tokens distributed each month. This change aligns with the annual budget of 128M SA tokens until the first halving event in 2024 and leaves an 8M token surplus in the treasury. The new model aims to simplify the tracking and understanding of token distribution, making the process more fluid and predictable for participants. The first distribution under this new system is set for November 1st, 2021. The project emphasizes that the actual amount distributed monthly may be less than the 10M cap, as it is contingent upon community claims and governance votes. Additionally, the Superalgos Token Telegram Group has simplified its plugin workspace to facilitate user interaction, and contributors from October 2021 have until the end of the month to set up their claims.

Opinions

  • The previous distribution model, tied to software releases, was deemed too arbitrary and complex for the growing project.
  • The new monthly distribution model is seen as a more organized and communicable approach that scales with the project's growth.
  • The decision to distribute up to 10M SA tokens per month is a strategic choice that simplifies the budgeting process while aligning with the annual token allowance.
  • The project acknowledges that the actual distributed amount may vary due to the governance system's dynamics, which includes community claims and voting.
  • The simplification of the Token Distribution Superalgos plugin workspace reflects a commitment to improving user experience and accessibility.
  • The announcement encourages prompt action from October 2021 contributors to ensure their claims are registered before the deadline.

Superalgos Shifts Token Distribution to Match the Calendar: One Distribution Event Per Month

Starting November 1st 2021, the project will distribute tokens every month to make work and rewards more fluid and predictable.

The Issuing Schedule mandates that there is an annual budget of 128M SA tokens until the first halving event in 2024. Until now, distribution events used to be attached to each release of the software. So far, each release was allocated an arbitrary fraction of the yearly budget determined by the perceived value the release was adding to the project.

The model worked well during the early days, as it was simple enough and there wasn’t much else to consider.

However, as the project and the collaboration grow, we need to move to a distribution schedule that is easier to track, understand, and communicate. The collaboration is growing, and we’re constantly adapting the organization to be able to scale.

From now on, instead of allocating an arbitrary fraction of the yearly budget to each release, the project will distribute up to 10M SA tokens per month, starting November 1st, 2021.

The choice of 10M tokens per month has to do with the fact that it is a nice, round approximation to the 128M tokens available per year. The 8M yearly surplus will remain in the treasury account for future consideration.

Notice that nothing changes in terms of Token Economics or the Issuing Schedule. This is purely an organizational evolution.

Also, notice that the project will not necessarily distribute 10M tokens per month. The 10M number is a monthly cap. That is, the project may distribute less than 10M tokens.

Remember that the allocation of rewards results from a complex web of claims and votes cast by the community through the governance system. It is common for certain reward pools to be left unclaimed, leaving a varying number of tokens on the table.

Next Distribution Event: November 1st, 2021
