Sunsets Are Nature’s Art

“Sunsets are brushstrokes of splashing and dashing colors across the evening sky. They are simply nature’s art.” — Carmen Micsa
I have many favorite painters, such as Monet, Van Gogh, and Georgia O’Keeffe, to mention just a few, but I have to be honest: a resplendent sunset can dazzle me as much as a painting. When the sun sets, the colors shift in the sky and leave room for pure art and poetry.
A sunset’s beginning, middle, and end offer an artistic reverie. Sunsets provide a complete show and play upon colors colliding with each other until darkness engulfs the day.
In 2022, during Christmas winter break, my husband and I took our teenage children to Kona, Hawaii. Our family vacation was not only about going to the beach and exploring waterfalls, and volcanoes, but it was also about watching the sunset every evening.
The sunset in the picture above welcomed us on our first day in Kona, which made us eager to arrange our schedule so that we could revel in this magnificent art in the sky put together by the Master painter of this universe.

Our second sunset was after we enjoyed boogie boarding as a family. At the end of being tossed around by waves that crashed against the shore, we sat at the top of the rocks and watched the sun, a fiery ball, sink into the ocean.
We felt a similar stillness that one feels inside a museum admiring works of art. We just stood there and watched the world turn orange and reddish.

The kids wanted to do some shopping in the Kailua Kona district, where restaurants and exquisite shops overlooked the ocean and big cruise ships like this one.
As we strolled around and stopped to check out the shops, I asked for a break to watch the sunset.
The sun seemed to play hide and seek with the big cruise ship spreading red and orange hues across the waves all the way to the shore.
This sunset was the culmination of beauty that would make any painter want to etch fiery memories on their canvas.

On our fourth evening, we almost missed the sunset, but then were rewarded with a mixture of orange, tangerine, and lemon colors blend in all across the sky.
Again, I loved our open-air museum with so much room to revel in the art spread across the horizon, the biggest canvas out there.
The magical sunset show never disappointed us. On the contrary, it left us wanting more “natural art” on our vacation and any other time when we could admire fiery skies.

Our last sunset and work of art were flaring up and glaring at us from “the end of the world,” a place full of history, mysticism, and danger. See my article about the significance of this place full of mystery and tragedy set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.
With each sunset, I felt that I moved around an outdoor art gallery, admiring another artist.
What a feast for the eyes and the soul!
Final takeaways:
- Nature is the most marvelous artist.
- Walking and art should coincide and intersect at some point in time during our exploration.
- Art is not confined to the inside walls of an art gallery. Art is all around us.
- Art makes us ponder on the beauty of life and gives us hope.
- Be still and relish these moments of surreal beauty that surround us throughout the day.
- And last, but not least make your own art — splash around for others to enjoy, too!
