Summer Storms
A Boating Adventure

Growing up, I experienced amazing summer storms.
We lived on a clifftop with a view over a beautiful flood plain. Squinting, you could see the clifftops several kilometers away on the other side of the flood plain. Huge stately, old River Red Gums grew here. Thick groves of smaller gums springing up from the last flood.
Summer storms rolled in, bringing a wonderful display of lightning over the plain. Our house on the clifftop a perfect place to watch the show.
Big fat raindrops would begin falling. Petrichor! The (usually) parched soil and plants rejoicing in fresh rain washing the dust off, refreshing the sandy soil, allowing new growth.
The best thing was getting into our bathers and running under the water tank overflow. The big cement tank warmed the water so when it gushed over we had a warm shower of beautiful rainwater. So sweet and refreshing! Usually, the rains came after a hot spell, the air hot, no longer dry.
It was fabulous!
My new home on the Åland Islands in Finland can also have summer storms. Out in our boat one day, we saw big dark clouds forming.

It was a warm summer’s day. We took the boat to visit some friends. After lunch, the clouds kept building. After checking the weather app, we decided to head home. A thirty-minute boat trip back to our dock.

Our trip included a shortcut through a canal. It can look so wonderfully pretty in the sunshine. Hand-dug by prisoners during the Russian occupation of Finland in 1882, Lemtröm’s Canal saves time getting to the eastern side of the city.
Heading straight towards that black cloud front was very disconcerting!

My partner was driving the boat. Normally a very calm man, I could feel his stress as we headed towards the cloud bank. Our boat, an inboard engined open boat, is not something you want to be on when it’s pouring with rain. There is nowhere to hide! (Well, there is, but you can’t hide and drive it at the same time!)

What a thing of beauty, this storm cloud! Like a fluffy, curved wall! The black underneath in contrast to the wispy white cloud next to it, an amazing contrast!

Lighting was flashing in the distance — I didn’t manage a photo of that. I was scared, trying to take photos, hoping my phone wouldn’t fly out of my hand into the water!
Big drops of rain started to fall intermittently as we got closer to the harbour. Would we make it into our spot and get the boat cover up in time?
And we did! We ran to the car after getting the boat cover on. Safe. Dry. Glad to be on land.
What a stormy adventure!
