Summer Journey
DEP Summer Contest

Hi, God. Could You please, if you deem I deserve this, guide me to the Summer warmth of Your presence?
I know, I know. I need to trek from the cold mountain of mind, kick aside rocks of distrust, face formidable boulders of conceit, sweat up hills — unwrap layers of conformity.
I’d be humbled, then, to gaze at paths of Your wildflowers near streams of Your favor. You likely groan at our news of injustice, but thousands like me, in tiny ways, hope to plant heather and lavender, thyme, butterfly weed, lilies of the valley and fairy foxgloves on these paths.
And stand, stand wherever we may find ourselves in Your world midst galaxies galore. Stand for truth. Stand for love. For beauty. Justice. Stand for Your trust in us. Stand for those Black, of color, objectified. Stand and bow, dig, and plant steadfast seeds in Your Sunlight.
Our earth needs a big stretch and a big yawn that separates all the lies and deceit. It needs a Summer vacation for meditation and reflection. May the Summer Sun warm the bereft of truth. May all who are called nurture the fragrant gardens of sanctity, truth, and wonder.
When will I see You? In the next prayer? When will I feel that Sun on my chest again?
I’ll put on my faded jeans, green short-sleeved shirt, and daisied backpack and see how far I can hike today, a canteen of Your Words at my side, a straw hat that lifts to You on the journey, a bird trill in my sneaker’s step.
