Summary

"Summer and You" is a reflective poem that intertwines the essence of summer with the memory of a past love.

Abstract

The poem "Summer and You" captures the vibrant imagery of summer, with its resplendent trees adorned with bougainvillea and Gulmohar blooms, juxtaposed against the thirsty, forsaken streets yearning for relief from the heat. It paints a picture of couples seeking solace in parks during balmy evenings, while the narrator's heart beats wildly for a lost love, whose memory is as persistent as the summer's heat. The poem conveys the narrator's reluctance for summer to end, as it would symbolize the departure of this love, leaving behind an arid heart filled with longing. As summer fades, so do the lingering thoughts of the beloved, with the rains arriving to cleanse the narrator of these memories. The poem concludes with a prayer for the beloved not to return, so as not to taint the beauty of summer with the pain of past transgressions.

Opinions

  • The narrator has strong, unresolved feelings for someone, which are intensified by the arrival of summer.
  • Summer is personified as a season that both brings beauty and intensifies the narrator's sense of loss and longing.
  • The poem suggests that the narrator's heart is "arid" and "craving," indicating a deep sense of emotional drought in the absence of the beloved.
  • The imagery of the rains symbolizes renewal and the potential for emotional healing, yet also represents the pain of being cleansed of the beloved's memory.
  • The narrator's prayer for the beloved not to return reflects a desire to move on, despite the beauty of the memories associated with them during the summer.

Summer and You

Resplendent trees pregnant with blooms of bougainvillea and Gulmohar thirsty, forsaken streets eager for respite from the unforgiving heat couples hording parks making most of these balmy evenings dark blinds drawn allowing just a flicker of the unyielding sun. And my heart? My heart still beats wildly for you each time summer arrives - when the parched earth patiently awaits as do weary little birds for the blistering temperature to wane. But me - I’ve never wished for summer to end for that would herald your departure too leaving my arid heart craving. Summer though, does leave as do lingering thoughts of you as I pause to breathe trying to hold on to you but you go away like seasons do making way for the rains to drench me cleanse me of you. Don’t return again a prayer escapes my parted lips the same ones you had once kissed - may you never return again marking my beautiful summers with transgressions of matters of the heart.
