My Substack Monetization Odyssey as an Indian

Are you an aspiring Indian writer yearning to yield your earnings on Substack?

If so, you’re in good company. Let me share my own journey to success on Substack as an Indian writer.

When I first started, I was attracted to Substack’s model of allowing writers to set their own subscription price.

This was quite different from Medium’s model where subscription revenue is shared among all authors. I realized Substack provided more control and higher earning potential for writers.

My Lessons Learned in Maximizing Revenue

Setting my own subscription price was empowering yet daunting. I had to determine the value of my work while remaining affordable to readers.

After some trial and error, I aligned my pricing with the uniqueness of my content. This ensured I was fairly compensated for my efforts.

I also appreciated Substack’s transparent commission structure. After deductions, I receive the full remaining subscriber revenue.

This transparency allows me to accurately track my income and make smart financial decisions. As I build my subscriber base and deliver valuable content, I’m rewarded with substantial earnings.

The Payment Challenges in India

As an Indian writer, getting paid by Substack has some unique challenges. Substack pays out in INR but most Indian readers don’t want to pay in INR. International readers don’t always understand the currency conversion rate to INR either.

It’s been tough convincing subscribers to pay in INR. But by building relationships with readers, providing consistent high-quality writing, and delivering helpful content, I’ve slowly increased paid subscriptions.

My Strategies for Monetization

With subscriber revenue in India being difficult, I’ve focused on collaborating with businesses too. I use my free Substack content to attract a large subscriber base and build my reputation.

This catches the attention of businesses willing to pay for sponsorships and product mentions to reach my audience. It provides me an additional revenue stream beyond subscriber payments.

But it requires consistently publishing stellar content and building reader trust. By demonstrating expertise and delivering value, I position myself as a valuable partner. This unlocks opportunities to monetize without relying solely on subscriptions.

My Voyage Continues

Like a sailor navigating rough seas, I’m learning to overcome the challenges of monetization in India. With Substack’s flexible pricing and my evolving strategies, I’m steering towards success.

My words are the compass guiding me to new heights as a writer. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next!
