Substack Beats ConvertKit For Newsletter King

Substack is the newsletter platform of the future

In case you couldn’t tell from the headline, I really enjoy using Substack to send out my weekly newsletter.

However, it seems like this is a very unpopular opinion to have when compared to its main rival — ConvertKit.

While I do see the benefits of using ConvertKit, I think Substack has a couple things going for it that beat other newsletter platforms.

Of course, I’m biased in my reporting of this because like said before, I use the stackith of the subs to send out emails. Take that into consideration when reading this. I tried to keep this unbiased, I promise.

Here are my reasons.

Substack is searchable

Readers can find you without you ever having to send out a single email. Call it SEO, but for newsletters.

Actually, you can just call it regular SEO because if you type the name of a newsletter on Substack into Google, you still have a good chance of finding it online.

This is my №1 reason why Substack is the king compared to ConvertKit. As far as I know, very few other newsletter platforms have this feature. I’ve received dozens of subscribers from Google searches alone.

To me, search engines finding Substack makes it more of a social media network than just an email platform. Users can quickly and easily find several email newsletters about topics they like to read.

Substack is easy to use

I know one of ConvertKit’s biggest features over Substack is that it’s more customizable. And while I understand why that’s such a prominent feature, it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

I own and use an iPhone over an Android because I like the simplicity of it. I like that the world necessarily IS NOT my oyster on my phone and that I’m bound to a square cut layout of what I get.

For my newsletter, I like the same thing. I like how I have a template of available features and that’s it. Substack offers a lot — not as much as ConvertKit — but enough to get the job done and keep it looking clean.

  • Want to add an image or GIF? Copy and paste it in.
  • Want to create a button? Do it in one click.
  • Want to tell your subscribers to share your newsletter? Substack already does a great job of that on its own.

That third point brings me to my last reason.

Substack’s platform attracts new users

At the very bottom of every one of my emails, Substack includes a button that asks my subscribers if they want to share the email.

When my subscribers navigate my Substack page, it asks several times if they want to share my newsletter with their friends.

I’ve never once created a button or link that has anything to do with sharing the newsletter. Substack does that part very well on its own and tells me when I get signups because of it — which is more often than you’d think.

It’s one less thing I have to think about when creating a newsletter. It’s already there and ready to go.

ConvertKit might have that feature too, I’m honestly not sure. However, I am sure Substack has it and I love the results I get from it.

Substack is MY winner

I often see my fellow writers using ConvertKit and bashing Substack. Most times I understand their views, but I feel like they are missing out on a lot.

Email marketing is one of the most effective forms of marketing these days and tons of people are subscribing to new email lists every day. It seems like it might replace this podcast rave most of us have been on these last few years.

Bottom line, I really enjoy using Substack and if you don’t already have an email platform, my suggestion is to give this one a try instead of ConvertKit.
