INFORMATION

Submit To Serial Stories

The home for all fictional and non-fictional stories of five chapters or more (last update: 19.03.2023)

As many of you might have noticed, once a week I post a chapter of the series, Thirteen Years. I publish that series on ‘Serial Stories’, a publication I created a couple of months ago.

Why Serial Stories?

I used to post the chapters for Thirteen Years with a different publication, but there was no guarantee a chapter would publish on the day I submitted it, or even the day after. Now, I absolutely get that all editors are busy, so this is no critique directed towards anyone. Therefore, please don’t read it as such.

This has more to do with me wanting each next part of my story out on a specific day. Because of the irregular publishing of each part — sometimes within an hour after submission, sometimes three days later — I started my own publication.

From the moment I created the publication, I played around with the idea of opening it to others too, and that moment now has come.

Submission Guidelines for Serial Stories

Please consider the following submission guidelines before you request to be added as a writer for Serial Stories:

  1. This publication accepts only unpublished stories!
  2. Your story should have at least 5 chapters of between 700 -1500 words. Limiting your chapters to 1500 words will keep your readers engaged.
  3. The titles of your chapters should be consistent, mentioning the chapter number either in the title or the subtitle. Please see this guide to format your titles.
  4. Always add a properly credited image to your chapter, just above or below the title and subtitle. Please use a different image for each chapter, and also click the ‘alt text’ to add a description of the image.
  5. Please properly tag your story and make sure one tag is the same throughout all chapters of your story. That one tag should not be too common (please inform us which tag this is), as the link to it will be used to list all chapters on one page.
  6. There are two time slots per day available for stories (all Amsterdam times): 10.30am and 4.30pm. This means, for now, there will be a maximum of 14 stories running on Serial Stories. (Please check to see which time slots are available.)
  7. When we accepted you as a writer and you have your story ready, please send the first three chapters of your story as drafts.
  8. We require you to send your next chapter at least two days before the agreed time of publication, otherwise we cannot guarantee your story will be published on time.
  9. Please use either ProWritingAid or Grammarly to polish your story before submitting.
  10. The publication will accept all genres of stories.
  11. An obvious one: you must be the author of the story you want to share here on Serial Stories. (This also means that no AI-created stories will be accepted. Please note that the new Medium guidelines requires you to clearly label your stories when they are AI assisted.)
  12. We reserve the right to decline a story for the publication when not in line with the submission guidelines above, or for other reasons which we will make known when declining.
  13. If you need help with the above, please let me know in email ([email protected]) and I will guide you through it.

What do you get when you publish on Serial Stories?

  1. Each week, on the same day and time, the next chapter of your story will go live.
  2. You will get your own page on Serial Stories, which you can follow from the navigation of the publication (see example here).
  3. I will read all stories before scheduling them for publication, and if necessary, will make suggestions for changes, without changing the ‘voice’ of your story. However, as mentioned in point 7 above, please submit polished versions of your story.
