Study of a Hat
Pencil Sketch

These three sketches of a hat were done for a final project in my art class back in 1995. We had to take objects and sketch them at different angles. My partner at the time had this great hat that had belonged to her father and I decided to sketch it. I used HB, 2B, and 2H graphite pencils on these.
There is an amusing story behind why I chose this hat. At the time, I was deeply entrenched in a day time soap called Another World. One of the characters, Jake, had disappeared and his wife at the time was holding a funeral for him because everyone assumed he was dead. Well, he came back to town at his own funeral dressed in a yellow suit (I called it a canary suit) and wearing a hat very similar to the one I sketched above. I will forever have the image of him in that suit and hat whenever I look at these sketches.
I even found the episode of Jake showing up at his own funeral. If you look closely enough, you can barely see the yellow suit under his tan coat… and of course, the hat.
