Drive Michael Crazy Week
Student Driver
The driver behind you is watching and keeping their distance
I am behind you,
Watching every move, you make,
Cringing but cheering.
My driver’s ed driving teacher was Coach Conger. Bless that man’s heart. I wasn’t the student who showed up already knowing how to drive. That’s unusual in the farming community I live in, where many students are driving tractors as soon as they are tall enough.
But not me. I did not live on a farm and had never driven anything, and my parents felt as though it was the school’s job to teach me how to drive. In other words, they were scaredy cats.
I remember running off the road a time or two because keeping that massive vehicle on that tiny road was so hard. But I survived, and for some reason, Coach Conger passed me. But he certainly earned that pittance he got for teaching driver’s ed that summer.
I got my license and have driven untold miles by now. But these days I expect every “Driver’s Education” sign on cars indicates it could be a young me. I give them plenty of room. But I want them to do well, too.
This week we have had a lot of fun with Michael Whalen after his article about haiku.
Here are a few of the results. I know I will miss some, so I apologize in advance! It’s a good thing when someone’s writing inspires people to try new things. Even if they hate it. Or claim to. Who could hate haiku? 😉
Could you read some of their other stuff, too? This prompt was just for fun, and to laugh with (at?) Michael a bit, but all are amazing writers who are worthy of your time.
Kim McKinney drives a lot of miles and has gone through quite a few cars. As she drives, she usually is listening to webcasts or audiobooks and wondering if certain drivers ever had driver’s education. She doubts it.
