I understand. With lockdown looming over many of our lives across the globe, it can be difficult to feel motivated or creative and it can feel a little overwhelming at times.

If you use some of these tips, you should be getting back to taking amazing photos in no time.

4 quick ways to gain that much-needed photo inspo

Go out for a walk

This one is the easiest inspiration of them all. All you need to do is remember to bring your camera with you.

Or, failing that, take out your smartphone and start snapping away. But unlike the other walks, you may have had, try to intentionally look out for photo opportunities.

For example, if you are walking in the woods, try and take a shot of the trees from the ground looking above.

Or, if you are in a shopping centre, try and capture the reflections on the glass or capture the amazing architecture from angles other than the human eye. Try and frame a building through a bench, for example.

Whenever you have the time to go out for a walk during this lockdown, take a few minutes to be mindful of your compositions and feel free to try different things out.

Over time, this will build up as an amazing habit to have and shooting from different angles and compositions will soon be second nature to you.

Ask people for permission to shoot their portraits

Say you are going on said walk and you see some people as you walk. If you want to, I suggest you ask them to stop for a minute or 2 and take their photo. If they say yes, wonderful.

By asking to take people’s portraits, you will be gaining two essential skills that will be needed as a photographer.

First and foremost, you will be shooting portrait photography. This is one of the most popular types of photography and it is very handy to be able to shoot great portrait photos. If you can nail this, you are laughing.

It is also very lucrative and being a competent portrait photographer could lead to you getting clients and you could even scale it up to a side-hustle.

This will help build your reputation and word-of-mouth could lead to you becoming a very successful photographer.

Secondly, you are developing essential communication skills. When shooting portraits, you will need to communicate effectively with the subject to tell them how to pose and whether to move in order to get a better picture.

This will boost your confidence as a photographer, particularly if you are a little introverted.

Take a little look on Instagram

Yep, that’s right. Rather than scrolling through Instagram aimlessly, dedicate 5–10 mins a day to look through the work of other photographers.

This will help you to get an idea of what your photography style is and where you fit in creatively.

Some famous, world-renowned photographers I recommend you take a look at include Peter McKinnon, Chris Hau and Brandon Woelfel.

If you want to double down even further, search for where you live on Instagram and look at some photos taken by photographers in your local area. This will help you a lot and could even lead to you getting some useful collaboration and connection opportunities.

Soon, you will have lots of inspiration to draw from and you will soon be shooting some amazing photos.

Finally, print some of your fave photos out and hang them on your wall

It’s time to get some of your favourite photos out of your digital album and into the real world.

To get the most out of this, pick 2–5 of your favourite photos and hang them in different parts of your house.

By looking at them on a daily basis, you will be left feeling inspired, proud and motivated because you will be seeing your own artwork featured in a prominent part of your house.

Reminding yourself of the hard work and effort you put into shooting that photo will leave you feeling pumped and ready to go out there and take some more breathtaking photos.

Now, who doesn’t want to feel like that every day?
