Streams

A Short Story

Photo by Nathan Anderson on Unsplash

The gentle stream flowed peacefully along, water splashing off the rocks producing soft trickling sounds. Birds chirped in the trees overhead as a cool breeze pushed its way through. Nature had ways to calm one’s mind, and usually, it worked.

A picture loosely held of her smiling mother had wet splotches from tears that streamed down the girl’s cheeks. Short gasps of air with each inhale; soft moans with each exhale. An occasional wipe of the eyes was made to stop the stream momentarily, only for it to start again soon after.

“Rest in peace,” was all the girl could say, for she didn’t know what to say anymore.

The snapping of sticks and crunch of leaves grew closer to tell her she wasn’t alone. Heavy footsteps stopped beside her as a man sat down with an arm immediately wrapping around her. She leaned into the embrace for added comfort nature couldn’t bring her.

“It’ll be okay,” was all the father could say when nothing was left to be said.

One day it will get better.
