Storymaker Affiliate Disclosure

About links in stories and articles under the “writing tips” tag on Storymaker

No one likes being “sold to” or led down the garden path by unscrupulous or sneaky marketing. I certainly don’t, and you shouldn’t either. That is why I want to be up front with you about the nature of affiliate links here on Storymaker.

Writers on Storymaker, including me, may include affiliate links or links to their own books and services in their stories. However, in accordance with Medium’s Advertising Policies, these stories will always include a note to let you know. Here’s the extract from that Medium post on affiliate links;

Affiliate links, such as link out to Amazon with your code, or any other link out where you will receive a commission or other value, are allowed in posts. But, you must disclose somewhere in the post that it includes affiliate links. Read more

The main tools promoted on Storymaker are ProWritingAid and Grammarly and are contextually relevant to the theme of content. These affiliate links will only be present on articles under the tag “Writing Tipsand nowhere else on Storymaker. Also, these links will never occur more than 2 or 3 times at most in any one post and they will always be in context.

What Happens When You Click An Affiliate Link

When you click on a link, you will be taken to an external source of further information, or to a product available for purchase. These products may be third party or something the writer has made themselves. Where affiliate links, if you buy the product, the writer whose article you are reading will usually receive a commission from the provider. This doesn’t increase your cost, in fact, in many cases you may receive a discount.

You are at no point under an obligation to make a purchase using the links in stories. However, you may find that the tool or service promoted may help you improve your writing or business process. For example; I currently use ProWritingAid to help correct errors in my writing. I have used Grammarly for many years before it. Therefore I recommend these tools because I know they work well.

Why We Use Affiliate Links In Articles

As I mentioned above, affiliate links will only appear in stories under the tag “Writing Tips”. I have chosen to allow affiliate links and promotion of writer’s products and services on Storymaker for a couple of reasons;

  1. The work editors do here on Storymaker has always been voluntary. No body receives payment for their time, so I felt that it’s reasonable to allow contributors make a few pennies from the work they publish here.
  2. The commissions writers receive from affiliations are generally small, but every one helps writers cover costs and generate an income. That said, you are under no obligation to use any of the books or products recommended.
  3. You’re a writer, and I want Storymaker to become a resource that helps you do a better job, build your business and income from your work. The stories under “Writing Tips” will be that resource.

The work environment has changed dramatically for everyone, and with this change in Storymaker content, we hope to help you do better work and perhaps earn a few bob in the process. And when you buy a fellow writer’s product of service, or indeed a product they recommend, you are supporting them in their work.
