Story Titles that Get Lost in the Crowd
Are there times you can’t even recognize your own stories?
Choosing the right story title to represent what you’re talking about is not always easy for some writers. It can sometimes be a difficult writing challenge, trying to prevent your title from getting lost in the crowd.
Have you ever seen a title on your favorite writing platform, and been unsure about whether it was yours?
Let’s face it, there really is nothing new under the sun. Sometimes many writers will end up writing on the same topic, and may likely use the same or similar words. Since that is the case, what can writers do, to make sure their story stands out from the crowd?
Titles Lost in the Crowd
For some writers, this issue may not seem like a big deal to them. As a result, their titles might regularly get lost in the crowd, without the writer even knowing why.
Every writing trying to make a buck, make a name, or both, is painfully aware how invisible you can feel in a sea full of awesome writers. It’s hard enough to stand out as it is, without creating titles that are so generic, you can’t even recognize their your own.
Sadly, I don’t believe all writers put enough importance on their titles. I make this observation based on the less than effective titles that I’ve seen (not to mention downright hard to understand). I think the writer in instances like this must have been in too big a hurry to start writing their story.
The sad thing is, it probably was an awesome story. But if not enough time is spent on crafting a good title, not many readers — if any — will ever get a chance to read how great it is.
Are you starting to think about some of your own titles? Could any of them have been better at grabbing the reading community’s attention? If you are, pondering these questions, that’s a good sign. Acknowledging the problem is half way to solving it.

Making Story Titles Stand Out
Before you go too far and start to stress out over this issue, my suggestion is to calm down. Simply decide from today forward, that you’ll concentrate on making your story titles better.
But what does better mean? Just what can you do to make your story titles pop, or at least stand out so the darn writer of the story can identify it.
Here’s a simple solution that I typically try to use with my titles. I believe this basic little method is an effective one, and I suggest all you writers try it out as well.
All my method involves is making sure to insert at least one identifiable word. Choose a word that is not as commonly used, in connection with the topic.
For example, notice three of my titles I’ve listed below. Not only do my identifiable words cause my titles to jump out at me right away, but I believe the titles work effectively to help get my stories noticed.
As you glance over these titles, think about which words I considered identifiable, to the point that my titles are instantly identifiable to me.

I feel the above titles worked sufficiently for me, because I was able to convey exactly what the stories are about, plus include my related category tags:
The category tags are: EMPLOYMENT | WRITERS | WRITING
In addition to accomplishing those two important things, I inserted one readily identifiable word in each title, so I could recognize them as mine.
The identifiable words are: BAFFLED | CONSCIOUS | LAUNCH
I have to admit, I might not always do the best job of crafting the right title, but trust me, it’s not from lack of trying. When I sit down to write my stories, I do my best to treat the titles like they are as important as the rest of the story.
