Stop Wailing! Keep Writing!
Don’t be a party pooper.
No platform is without its flaws. The same is true about Medium. But, as writers, we need to understand to embrace those flaws and try and use the features a platform provides to the best of our skills and advantage.
Medium can’t please everyone. And why should they? It is not their goal. I understand that Medium should take care of its writers to grow, but they don’t have to give in to each writer’s whim.
In my almost two and a half years on Medium as a Partner Program (MPP) member/writer and two years before that as a reader, I have always seen people complaining about the platform one way or the other. However, since the start of 2021, the number of complainers has surmounted to such a level that I see at least 2–3 stories about how Medium isn’t treating them correctly.
At the end of the day, Medium is a business, and they are here to make money. Deal with it.
Medium has seen growth in MPP members over the years, more so in recent months thanks to Pandemic, Medium Writing Challenge, Referral Program, etc. And they have constantly been tinkering with the way the platform works behind the scene, as any business would do to make each iteration better than the previous.
Writers are joining the platform with unrealistic expectations. First, they join the platform and immediately want to make money like Tim Denning, Zulie Rane, etc. Then, upon not getting those expectations fulfilled, they are bashing Medium.
However, they do not understand that these writers have been writing on the platform for years, day in day out. They have built a portfolio of stories under their belt, which is a factor in their massive incomes on this platform. Also, over time they have realized and adapted to how the platform and the readers on the platform respond to stories and incorporated that into their writing.
Medium is a great platform to write and grow your art of writing, but if you wish to become a four-digit earner on this platform, they show up every day.
Don’t wail if you can’t become Tim or Zulie within a few months. It took them years. Deal with it. Allow yourself the courtesy as a writer to grow and build your audience. Learn from other writers. Mix in your personal touch to the stories. Determine what type of writing suits you and follow it. Evolve with changes Medium introduces.
But I implore you to please stop complaining. It isn’t doing you any good or other writers. I know you are better than this.
Be better, be brave, keep striving.
