Stop treating your followers as numbers

It is a hideous sight

I can understand the race towards 100 followers, and why you would be desperate to get there. The problem I have, is why continue thinking like that? Why would you artificially try to increase the number of people following you, without any care about their writing?

A lack of humanness

I think at the first sight you might think that increasing the number of followers helps with engagement, but it doesn’t.

You are not creating an audience or connections with people. You are simply following them hoping to follow you back, in exchange for increasing a number that doesn’t mean too much.

You can see an account with a humongous number of followers, only to have little to no engagement on their stories. The opposite is also to be found within Medium, people that have a small number of followers but have a fantastic engagement for their post.

The difference between the 2 situations is that for one person the follower count means something and for the other, it doesn’t mean anything.

You want your follower count to mean something. Otherwise, you will see an increase in your follower count, lying to yourself that you’ve made progress on the platform, when in fact you didn’t.

Build a community

I don’t think rushing towards increasing your number of followers is useful. If you artificially try to increase that number, using a follow-to-follow method or some other variations of it, you won’t increase your engagement.

I think one should focus on developing connections. You engage with stories that you like and people who you find interesting.

In the rush for increasing income, people forget that in your real life, you don’t build connections by artificially trying to interact with someone.

I think being genuine, and applying the same principles that govern the real world, you will also find success here.

Tim Ferris in one interview talked about this. He said that having 1000 followers that support you, is one of the most important things for a creator.

Focusing on creating better stories, being genuine with other people is the most important thing to build a real audience in the long run. Doing that for a significant amount of time will naturally lead to success.
