I didn’t start embracing my nerdniess until high school. I got heavily into anime, j-pop, and musicals. Of course, there were an endless barrage of ignorant comments from my classmates.

“Jasmine, you’re such an Oreo”

“I didn’t think black people could be nerds”

“You’re into anime? Are you trying to act white?”

Shut up. Just shut the mother fuck up.

Why can’t I enjoy nerd shit without being accused of acting white? Why am I not allowed to nerd out while also embracing my blackness?

There has always been this dumb misconception that being a nerd is exclusive to being white. Can we please crumble up this nonsense and throw it in the trash?

Let black people nerd out. Let black kids nerd out. And let them embrace their blackness while doing so.
