Stop Talking Yourself Out of Moving Forward.
Get out of your head and stop thinking it's such a big deal.
Overthinking will kill all of your drive.
I'm not saying not to think anything through. That's being reckless, and that doesn't help anyone.
What I mean is stop making what you want to do seem like such a big deal. It isn't.
The more you let time pass, the worse the idea of performing the task will get, and you will end up talking yourself out of it.
This is how all of us talk ourselves out of pursuing our dreams and chasing after our goals.
We start giving ourselves excuses like, 'I don't have time,' or 'this isn't the right time,' or 'I'm too old for that,' or 'I don't know enough about it,' etc.
If you're ready to make a change or tired of realizing you could have started and been on your way a long time ago, keep reading.
My goal with this blog is to help break down a few fundamental mind shifts necessary to stop overthinking and finally start doing.
Here are three mindset shifts that will help you.
1. Come to terms with the fact that there will never be a 'right time.'
There were so many times in the past when I fell for the lie that my situation, circumstances, whatever you want to call it, had to be a certain way for me to be 'ready.'
The truth is I was looking for convenience.
But we're not taught that pursuing our dreams and goals is anything but convenient.
There will never be a right time. You will never feel like you're truly ready.
You have to talk yourself into taking the plunge anyway because time will pass you by whether you like it or not.
If you're feeling overwhelmed about starting, I wrote a blog to help you understand why that happens and how to begin moving forward despite what your nerves tell you. Check it out here.
If you don't know where to start, an excellent resource is already staring you right in the face.
There are so many blogs here on Medium; you can find plenty of information and resources just on this platform to help you get started.
Go ahead and take that first step! You don't need to wait for a sign, permission, anything, or anyone.
2. Accept full responsibility.
If it's not happening, it's because you're not doing it or making it a priority.
Where there's a will, there's a way. Whoever said this wasn't lying.
Recently, I made the decision to stop giving myself an out when it comes to coming up with blog ideas, and this month, I've seen a tremendous change in my output, my stamina, and my mindset.
I used to see it as a chore, a drag, sitting in front of my laptop browsing Medium and the Internet for new ideas.
But after I committed to making a change, I now see it as an opportunity and a necessity to accomplish my goals.
We all need to go through this mindset shift at one point or another to reach the next level.
We need to be honest and own what we're doing and not doing.
We need to take responsibility for what is and isn't helping us move forward and reach our goals.
Once you've come to terms with what you need to do next, you can begin making a change and finding a solution that does work for what you're looking to accomplish.
3. Instead of focusing on what's in your way, focus on finding the way out.
This shift in mindset can bring about monumental changes.
This is called becoming solution-oriented.
Instead of thinking and focusing only on how the puzzle is a mess, accept it and change your focus to figuring it out one piece at a time.
This is how transformations happen.
It's not a quick, miraculous process.
It's not magic.
It's taking one thing at a time, one step at a time, one task at a time.
You need to train your mind to change its focus.
It will take time, but the more you practice looking for solutions, the better you will get at finding them.
As I mentioned earlier, I recently changed my focus on finding blog ideas.
In just one month, I've seen a drastic change not just in coming up with said ideas but also in developing them (how fast I write a blog) and editing them (I don't have to edit as much now because my grammar has improved).
Takeaways.
Don't allow your thoughts and ideas of possible failure to get the best of you.
For many years, I was afraid of starting and continuing something out of fear of looking dumb and failing.
The truth is failure is part of the process.
It teaches you to become resilient, persistent, patient, problem-solving, and any characteristic that describes a successful person.
Change your mindset about failure, and you'll stop talking yourself out of moving forward.
