Stop Panicking And Start Dreaming Instead

How dreaming can help you get through uncertain times

Photo by Jan Kahánek on Unsplash

This is a line I recently wrote in my journal:

“Just for the record if anyone should ever find this and didn’t know already: Corona really sucks!”

Am I the only one freaked out by the uncertainty that this virus comes with?

  • I don’t know if I can celebrate my grandpa’s birthday with him this year
  • I can’t make dinner plans with my friends, who I miss terribly
  • Some people I know might have to re-arrange their wedding plans
  • I can’t plan anything
  • And I don’t even for how much longer it is going to be like this

It scares me a little if I’m honest!

Acknowledging What Is Without Letting It Take Over

I have to remind myself that it is absolutely okay to feel these overwhelming feelings. It’s alright to be sad and frustrated from time to time. Beating myself up for having those emotions is not going to help me in any way.

COVID-19 has thrown our lives upside down and although there are always positive outcomes in a crisis, I still find it hard to adapt to the social distancing part. I really just miss people.

At the same time I am also aware that it isn’t healthy for us to dwell on those feelings too much and stay in a sate of frustration or sadness for longer periods of time.

So I tried to think of an escape plan…

The Power Of Dreaming

Dreaming is a wonderful tool of making up your own reality.

It allows you to let your mind wonder wherever it wants to:

  • To places you have visited and would love to go back to
  • To memories you want to relive
  • To new, imaginary places, that you’ve just created in your head

Dreaming allows you to build the reality that suits you, no matter what is actually going on around you. Isn’t that wonderful?

How To Dream

My favourite ways to dream are the following three:

Dream Board

Some people have a vision board with pictures of what they wish to achieve.

Why not create a dream board and put up photos of your favourite places? A beach house? The cottage in the countryside? Or the things you would do right now if you were able to. Horse riding? Surfing? Going to a concert? You can be creative with it and draw or paint something or create a collage from printed pictures.

Try to make your dream board a reminder of all the beautiful things you’ll be able to go back to after this crisis or just make it full of amazing things that help you escape reality for a bit. It’s your canvas!

Journaling

It’s a good way of keeping track of your daily routines, feelings, frustrations. But writing also just allows you to be creative and invent a new story.

You can come up with your own reality, you can pretend that the virus never happened and write about your ideal day. How it was to see your family again. How it feels to go visit places again. What your next date will be like and what you’ll be doing.

Write about whatever the hell you want and have fun with it!

Day Dreaming

I came across an article recently about the power of staring out the window.

Sitting and observing is a wonderful way to dive into a day dream. Giving your mind the freedom to create this whole new world is so liberating and can feel so refreshing.

I hope this has inspired you to start dreaming from time to time and — as Pippi Longstocking sings (in the German version of the song) — to “create the world just the way you like it”.

So… what are you dreaming of?
