Stop ‘Open In App’ ing Me!

Why does Medium give mobile phone users such a hard time?

Wake up in the morning, reach for the phone, snuggle under the covers again and sign in to Medium. First things first, I check my Partner Program earnings.

Sound familiar?

And who can resist that lit-up green bell? 24 notifications!

Phew, my notifications aren’t all about copy-cat highlighters, — on which don’t get me started. Yay, I’ve got two responses! Of course I want to read them.

The first one is a fabulous comment from a new follower, who gave me 50 claps, highlighted and even subscribed.

Hoo Boy, what a lift to start my day!

So, of course I’ll clap their comment straight away and reply, and then go to their profile page, read all about them, and scroll down to pick a story to read.

Only I’m stalled at the starting gate already. I can clap their comment, (just about, the clapper button is sticky and begrudging), but I can’t reply.

I scroll up, and there it is, the mysterious and infinitely annoying ‘Open in App’ sign.

Bumped out already!! This is the point where I start swearing out loud at my phone and my tone of voice scares the cat. His day just started with a bang, and I’ll be paying for that later.

I duly click the ‘Open in App’. Now I’m a kid with an ice cream and there’s a horde surrounding me who want to knock it to the ground. I’m too busy guarding my ice cream to actually eat and enjoy it.

I reply to the lovely comment. I go to their profile page, I read a delightful article there, and clap, then I go to comment. Nope, I can’t comment cos I’m bumped out again. There it is, Open in App.

Which means, most saliently, that my read for this lovely new subscriber has not counted as a member read.

Way to repay a new subscriber!

Not.

I’ve written Feedback about this annoyance many times. And yes, my apps are all up to date. The last time I bothered to complain to Feedback was 9 months ago. They told me they are aware of the problem and blah blah blah. But nothing’s changed, — it’s worse it’s getting.

So my only recourse is to never use my phone for Medium, unless it’s just to check my stats. I want my reads to count!

I have to plug in and turn on my laptop, sit upright and be in the office, so to speak, to be a reader on Medium. I can never just cosy up with a cup of coffee in one hand and my phone in the other.

Is this what Medium wants?

What does the Medium God have against mobile phone users? Not everyone in the world has a laptop, let alone a computer — I got my first ever computer only a year ago.

I have no idea how to go about finding statistics for mobile phone users on Medium, but I know I am not alone in this complaint...am I?

Am I doing something wrong? Please enlighten me.
