Stop Following These Quotes!
And reasons I don't follow them
“I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol.” — Steven Wright
There are more quotes similar to this one that refers to the same thing.
I understand its concept and what the author is trying to demonstrate but, in general, not taking care of your health just because a rock can fall out from the 10th floor and hits you in the head is not the ideal way to live your life.
From my point of view, even if you are the type of person that likes to live “a risky life” it’s not smart to ignore your health. Your body is the house where you will live for the rest of your life, and even if you think you are not going to be old, you will have a bad time living in it even at a young age if you don't take care of your health.
“You only live once.”
Popularized by Drake, the acronym YOLO has been circulating for 25-years. I like the most motivational quotes, but I feel this one does more harm than good.
People that have positive energy and motivation will go out and do stuff, but the younger ones usually do not get the right meaning of this quote. Teenagers, in general, make this quote an excuse to take bad decisions in life or health-threatening actions.
You only live once!–so make sure you will live first and a good life.
“Practice makes perfect.”
Does it? Same as the quote before this, it’s half true, and it can be very misleading because it's incomplete.
My answer is – Of course, it does, but only as long as you practice the right stuff!
You can give all your energy while running for a specific goal, you won’t be able to reach it only if you work harder. If your work is bad, it will not be rewarded and in some situations, it won’t even be noticed.
Practicing surely increases the skill of the ability to perform that certain task but think about practicing a bad habit.
“Good things come to those who wait”
Garbage quote! This one almost never works, and it's so bad that even encourages the „average Joe” to be lazy.
Good things are not coming if you wait, they are coming if you take action for them!
Yes, patience can be the key, but first, you must take a positive step forward to achieve your goal and start the process!
“Rules are made to be broken”
I am usually a fan of rules. I make rules of my own for myself and in general, I like an organized life.
At the same time, I agree not to be a sheep following the turd in life and to know what an opportunity is when you see it. That might require breaking some of the rules(not laws) in order to achieve it.
With that out of the way, rules are important because they tend to protect the weaker class in society as they might be disadvantaged if rules are broken. When rules are used in the right way they provide a stable environment and humans co-existent in a country, which leads to peace and development.
The quote makes no sense because rules can be broken but they are NOT made to be broken. Their purpose is a lot bigger than that.
“There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people”
Of course, there are stupid questions. They can be nonsensical questions or rhetorical questions that make you look stupid and there are just as many stupid answers. And by that, I don’t necessarily mean factually incorrect answers. Answering an obvious troll is stupid.
That saying, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question “, is meant to remind you to keep seeking knowledge. If the question is sincerely seeking understanding, it isn’t stupid. It might be common knowledge, but if you don’t have it, ask it.
Nothing is impossible
I know it is meant as a motivating guiding principle – not a literal truth.
I think using a lie to motivate people is very dangerous. People will either waste their lives chasing impossible goals, lose all faith in life, when they discover it is a lie, or blame themselves for failing, instead of seeing that failing is inevitable and it is ok to fail.
If it is a motivating principle, not a truth the saying should be: „Act like nothing is impossible.”
“You can be the bee and choose the flower, or you can be the fly”
Oh please don’t use the poor animals to prove your stupid point because it makes no sense! This is how animals work, “the dirt” for the fly is actually “the flower” for the bee. It doesn't work the way around. Flowers don't give benefits to flies. The fly is just as happy as the bee with its choice, so I don’t know why this quote makes people feel that one choice is better than the other.
