Stop Focusing On Your Goals And Focus On This Instead

The secret strategy to achieving all of your goals.

Every year, you set new goals for yourself.

You set a goal to lose 20 pounds. You set a goal to become a New York Times’ bestselling author. You set a goal to make $5,000 per month.

But time and time again, they never work out.

It feels like you’re Sisyphus trying to push the boulder up the hill, but never making any progress.

It‘s frustrating.

But here’s the thing about success: It’s not enough to just be focused on your goals. Instead, what you need to be focused on is your systems.

In the book “Atomic Habits” best-selling author James Clear explains the difference:

“Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.”

For example, losing 20 pounds is a goal. Learning to eat right is a system. And systems always trump goals.

Therefore, if you want to achieve extraordinary results in every area of your life, then you need to learn to upgrade your systems for living.

Here are a few systems I recommend for a few key areas of your life:

1) Rapidly Learning New Skills

Is there a skill you’ve always wanted to learn, but never had the time for?

Maybe you wanted to learn the piano, chess, or a second language?

Whatever it is, the important question is how do you learn?

While it’s tempting to just randomly start learning chess or guitar, it’s much better to strategically go about learning it.

Here are a few systems I recommend for rapidly learning new skills:

  • Pick a skill you love. If you’re learning a skill you genuinely love, you’ll feel more motivated to practice every day, even on the days when you’re feeling tired and frustrated.
  • Schedule time every day for learning your desired skill.
  • Practice improving your skill during the first 3 hours of your day. This is when you have maximum willpower.
  • Work in 25-minute spurts, followed by 5-minute breaks.
  • Eliminate all distractions in your environment. Turn off the TV, tell people not to bother you, put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb,’ etc.
  • Incorporate fast sources of feedback into your learning sessions to help you identify what you’re doing right and wrong.
  • Break down your skill into sub-skills and work on the most important sub-skills first.
  • Consistently review what you learned.

2) Tripling Your Productivity

Do you feel busy, but not productive?

If so, you’re not alone.

Unfortunately, being busy and being productive are not the same thing. Being busy is about getting more things done each day while being productive is about getting your most important tasks done each day.

Unfortunately, being productive is very hard for most people to do.

Here are a few systems I recommend for being more productive:

  • At the beginning of each day, write down the 3 things you want to accomplish that day.
  • Work on your most important task during the first 3 hours of your day. This is when you have maximum willpower.
  • Sit down and focus on your work for at least 60 minutes. This is the barrier to entry for productivity. Unfortunately, only 2 out of 100 people can do this.
  • Regularly take real breaks. This means a break without a screen. Look out the window, go for a walk, eat a snack, etc.
  • Listen to the same song every time you work. This will help put you in a state of “flow.”
  • Plan your work in advance. The 10/90 Rule says that the first 10% of the time you spend planning your work will save you 90% of the time in execution.
  • Clean your workspace. A clean workspace = peace of mind.
  • If you’re feeling depleted, take a nap. Taking a nap increases alertness, improves performance, and improves cognitive function.

3) Living A Healthy Lifestyle

Do you know what feels the BEST? Feeling healthy.

Conversely, do you know what feels the WORST? Feeling unhealthy

If you’re unhealthy, nothing else will seem to matter that much. Even if you’re a millionaire, wealth won’t matter if you’re always sick in bed.

I mean, what’s the point of having a great life if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy it?

Here are a few systems I recommend for living a long, healthy life:

  • Drink at least 64 oz of water a day
  • Exercise for at least 20 minutes a day
  • Sleep 8+ hours a night
  • Stretch regularly
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits
  • Meditate for 5 minutes a day
  • Take more nature walks

4) Creating An Organized Room

Do you constantly misplace your house keys or your cell phone?

Well, with a clean and organized room, you would never have to worry about that again.

Additionally, you’ll also just feel better when your room is organized and clean.

A clean room is like heaven and it’s always welcoming to come home to a clean room.

Here are a few systems I recommend for having a clean and organized room:

  • Throw dirty clothes into a hamper, not on the floor.
  • Vacuum once a week.
  • Don’t put stuff on flat services.
  • Have a designated place for your phone, wallet, and keys.
  • Have small trash cans conveniently located around your room.

5) Building New Habits Effectively

Oftentimes, you get people who say they want to write a book or run a marathon, but what they do on a daily basis doesn’t reflect that.

This is why the most important thing that any individual can do is cultivate good daily habits that align with what they want in life.

Unfortunately, building new habits is incredibly difficult.

But here’s the thing: It doesn’t need to be. You can easily build new habits in your life. You just need to know how to properly go about doing it.

Here are a few systems I recommend for building better habits:

  • Identify a cue for the habit you want to build. This could be a time, a place, or an emotion.
  • Think of a way to reward yourself after you follow through with your habit.
  • Design your environment in a way that makes doing your habit easy.
  • Hold yourself accountable. Tell a friend, post to social media, join a group, etc.
  • For days where you’re just not feeling it, do a mini habit instead. Mini habits are essentially the tiniest version of the habit you want to build.
  • Track your habits. Habit tracking is beneficial because it provides you with immediate feedback to show you that you’re on the right path toward your goals.

6) Elevating Your Happiness

If you ask anyone in the world what they want most in life, they’ll probably tell you that they want happiness.

Unfortunately, however, happiness is what most people understand the least.

This is why no matter where you are, whether you’re standing on a busy street during working hours, sitting on a subway train midday, or doing work at your office, you will always see a lot of unhappy people around you.

More often than not, their unhappiness is largely due to mistaken beliefs they have about what actually makes people happy.

Here are a few systems I recommend for increasing your happiness:

  • Take a moment each day to identify something positive that happened to you.
  • Tell someone else about that positive event. This can help you experience the positive emotions again.
  • Start a daily gratitude journal. Find 3 little things you’re grateful for every day.
  • Set a daily goal and track your progress.
  • Practice “positive reappraisal.” This is when you identify an event that is a burden and then you try to find the good in it.
  • Do something nice for someone else each day. This can be as simple as tipping someone more than you normally would.
  • Practice meditating for 5 minutes a day. This will help clear your mind and give you a feeling of inner calm.

It’s Time To Fall In Love With Systems

If you want to achieve your goals and elevate your life, then stop focusing on your goals and start focusing on your systems. Having better systems will create efficiency and multiply your effectiveness, which is the only way to accelerate your growth in every area of your life.
