Summary

The narrative describes an encounter where the author, after expressing deep admiration to someone they admire, realizes that even seemingly extraordinary individuals appreciate genuine human connection.

Abstract

The author recounts a chance meeting with a person they greatly admire, transitioning from being on stage to walking on the street. The author, feeling anxious and uncertain, rushes to speak with the admired individual, only to question their own sanity after a moment of hesitation following their declaration of admiration. The tension dissipates when the admired person smiles and embraces the author, acknowledging the need for such affirmations. This interaction leads to the author's revelation that despite their accomplishments, the person they admire still values basic human kindness and connection, reinforcing the idea that everyone, regardless of their stature, is fundamentally human.

Still People

One minute you were on stage The next you were on a sidewalk I quick-stepped and called your name You turned, looking wary in the night

I was feeling, fearing, looking like a lunatic I fumbled and stammered my deep admiration In the pause that followed I questioned my own sanity What had I said? Was I truly unmoored?

When your smile broke, I breathed again As you stepped toward me, I froze again Your arms embraced me in a tight hug I hugged back, but didn’t dare to linger I slightly loosened my hug, thinking we were done

But you held fast, and I hung on You said “Thank you. I really needed to hear that.” And then I understood Even amazing people are still people
