Stella’s Ghost

Spending Halloween night in an old cemetery turns out to be easier than Stella imagined, when Parkin’s ghost turns up.

Stella had pitched her tent, unrolled her sleeping bag, and lit the fire.

There was nothing else to do now but fill in time. A local radio station had set the task: spending the entire night of Halloween camping in a long-abandoned cemetery. The reward? $500. This was going to be the easiest 500 she’d ever made.

With the sun just hitting the horizon she pulled out her camera and began to wade through the long grass that hid most of the headstones. Covered with moss and lichen, most of them weathered to the point they were illegible, Stella had no way of knowing who was buried here and she felt a moment’s sadness that these people who had once loved and been loved were now completely lost to the ravages of time.

As she walked, she snapped photos: crumbling angels, fallen headstones, a dead branch looming from the grass like some sort of zombie hand reaching for freedom. She took a selfie with the branch hooked on her shoulder, faking a scream.

Perfect.

There was a crack behind her, and she glanced around. It would be great to get some pictures of wildlife while she was here too, but it was too dark to see anything now, and Stella turned on her phone’s torch to make her way back to camp.

Another crack, and she spun around, hoping to at least catch glowing eyes by torchlight. Nothing.

It wasn’t until something brushed her hair that her heart started to beat just a little faster in her chest. She picked up her pace, hurrying through the long grass towards the remnants of her dying fire.

‘Wait.’

The voice was barely there, a whisper in the wind. Stella broke into a run.

‘Don’t go!’

That was clearer. Stella leaped over one broken headstone but didn’t see the smaller one just behind and tripped, a sharp pain shooting up her leg as she went down.

‘Shit!’ She clutched her ankle.

She didn’t even realise the shadow was looming above her until it spoke again.

‘Are you all right?’

Stella glanced up into the kindest, brownest eyes she’d ever seen, his face framed by short brown whiskers.

‘Who are you? What on earth are you doing here?’

‘Let me help you.’ He held out his hand. ‘Then I’ll answer your questions.’

His hand was icy to touch, and she would’ve pulled away except he’d already grasped hers and reached down around her shoulders to help her stand.

‘My name is Parkin,’ he said, as she gingerly put weight on her foot, relieved to find she could actually walk on it. ‘And I live here.’

‘In the cemetery?’ She laughed as soon as the words were out of her mouth. How ridiculous. ‘Sorry.’ She shook her head. ‘Do you live in that house just down the road? I thought it was an old man who lived there.’

Parkin frowned, and then raised an eyebrow. ‘I’m older than I look.’

‘Right.’

He looked only slightly older than her, late thirties perhaps? Mid-forties at the oldest. Stella wasn’t sure exactly what it was about him, but she’d never felt so comfortable around someone she’d just met. Suddenly she didn’t want him to leave. The competition rules said she couldn’t take anyone to spend the night with her in the cemetery, but they didn’t say anything about someone who just happened to stroll on through.

‘So, Parkin. Would you like a drink?’

His eyes slipped down over her body, and Stella felt a thrill run through her.

‘Sure. Why not?’

She rummaged around in her bag, grateful she’d brought the bottle of red.

‘I only have one cup.’ She held up her tin camp mug. ‘Sorry, I wasn’t expecting visitors.’

‘I don’t mind sharing.’

She poured out the wine while he put more limbs on the fire, sitting back once it was roaring again.

They shared the wine, and she told him about the crazy competition, and he told her about his life, first working as a woodcutter, and now watching over the graves.

‘You’re a caretaker?’

He gave a strange smile. ‘Something like that.’

The wind picked up, blowing a strand of hair across Stella’s face. Parkin brushed it back behind her ear, his touch still icy cold, and Stella shifted in closer. ‘You feel like you need warming up.’

His gaze held hers, and she leaned in close, pressing her lips against his.

He kissed her back, and she reached up to hold the back of his neck as their kiss deepened. He moved his hands down her waist, pulling her in closer, and she pulled his shirt from his trousers, reaching underneath to press her hands against his skin.

‘Do you want me to fuck you?’ He seemed surprised, and she found her face turning red.

‘I don’t normally do this on a first date… but yes.’

His gaze flicked over her face for a moment, and she wasn’t sure he believed her. She pulled her top over her head, her bare nipples hardening in the cold air, another thrill travelling her body as his eyes widened, and he moistened his lips.

‘Only if you want to, of course.’

He nodded, his gaze meeting hers again. ‘Oh, I want to. It’s just… It’s been a long time.’

She cupped his face, her fingers brushing his beard. ‘We can take it slow.’

He nodded, his Adam’s apple bobbing, and she leaned in to kiss him again. His kisses were soft, tender, and as she stroked his back beneath his shirt he trailed his kisses over her cheek, to nuzzle her ear, and kiss his way down her neck and across her collarbone.

‘Wait.’ She pulled away, disappointment visible on his face, and reached into her tent to pull out her sleeping bag and lay it out over the ground. She sat down, patting the space beside her.

‘This might be more comfortable.’

He sat down beside her and smiled. This time when they kissed she lay back, pulling him on top of her, taking one of his hands to cup her breast.

‘Please,’ she whispered.

He groaned, and she could feel his cock pulsing in his pants. She let her hands wander, down his back, beneath his trousers to cup his backside. When her fingers brushed the hair between his cheeks he groaned again, his mouth covering a nipple, his tongue lapping and circling the small nub as her hands slid around to his front to wrap around his thick cock.

It was enough to spur him on.

He fumbled with her pants, and she helped him remove them, then he delved between her legs, tongue lapping her slit, circling and sucking on her clit. His fingers pushed between her legs, one, then two, then three, and she arched her back as wave after wave of pleasure bolted through her.

‘Parkin. Parkin. Oh my god.’ She grabbed his arm, pulling him up. He followed, his mouth pressing against hers as she wrapped her legs around his waist and guided his cock inside.

‘I don’t know your name.’ The words were almost moaned.

‘Stella.’

‘Stella.’ He gazed at her and shook his head. ‘Of course you are.’ He ran his fingers through her hair. ‘Stella, Stella, Stella. My beautiful Stella.’

He pressed deep inside her, and then carefully and slowly withdrew. She wrapped her legs tighter, leaning up to kiss him again as he eased inside again, grasping his shoulders as her orgasm continued to build.

They moved together, thrusts increasing in speed and depth as they clung to each other, gasping and groaning, until Stella cried out her orgasm to the stars, and Parkin grunted as he came inside her.

They kissed again, and Parkin pulled back to look at her. ‘You do look like her, you know. I never noticed before. My Stella.’

His words sent a rush of warmth through her chest.

‘You loved her?’

He nodded. ‘She was my one and only.’

‘What happened?’

Parkin rolled away, fumbling with the tie on his trousers. ‘She died. Like we all do.’

He gazed out over the gravestones, as behind them the sun came up, the first rays lighting up one headstone, seemingly undamaged by time.

‘I’m sorry.’

He shrugged, and looked at her. ‘Enjoy every minute of your life, treasure it all. You never know when things might change.’

Stella realised she could see the outline of trees through Parkin’s face.

‘Parkin?’

He smiled. ‘Sorry I didn’t tell you. Wish I could stay longer. Next year, maybe?’

He stood, and strode towards the one undamaged stone, fading away completely as he reached it.

Stella followed, the engraving on the stone just visible in the morning light.
