STC — Sam the Cat

Our First Cat

Samantha at the top of the steps. Fluffy Drawers, then Mattie and Mama Cat on the last step going down. All of these cats have passed on but were all loved in our family. I still miss them. Photo by the Author.

Around our house, we have always had cats. Not so many when I grew up; generally, there was always a dog and a cat. But, in the 46 years that my husband and I have been married, we became a multiple-cat family after our first five years or so of marriage when we returned Stateside from Germany.

I remember the first cat we had was Samantha. I think she was emotionally disturbed. She was only a kitten when she came to us via one of Dennis’ students. The kid lived with his family at the Army barracks where my family lived, my dad worked, and Dennis and I worked.
