Stay-At-Home Side Hustles Will Always Beat Gigs Like Uber — Here’s Why

Earning money from my couch will always win

It’s a very common question many of us side hustlers ask ourselves: Should we do online side hustles like blogging or in-person gigs like Uber Eats and Instacart?

As a disclaimer, I don’t discriminate against any kind of side hustle. I believe in making money with gigs like Uber Eats just as much as I believe in earning income from blogging.

But I do prefer online hustles like blogging and surveys over gigs like Uber Eats. It’s not just because I wrote the book on stay-at-home side hustles; I have a few personal reasons I prefer digital hustles.

Here’s why.

Convenience

The first reason why blogging beats Instacart and Uber Eats is how convenient it is. You don’t have to leave your home to make money from writing online.

I’d much rather try to earn money from my couch than drive around delivering groceries while gas is at an all-time high.

Sure, the work might be more consistent for gig workers compared to new writers, but the mileage on my car just isn’t worth it.

Plus, I’d rather stay home and not talk to people while I earn money. I don’t want to walk into different restaurants or pick up drunk folks from the bar so I can earn extra money.

Earning money from something like writing is just more convenient than driving around doing gig work. If you’re interested in earning more money from your writing, I have a book on that too.

Versatility

Another reason I prefer stay-at-home side hustles is how versatile they are. There are so many methods to earn money. If writing just isn’t cutting it for me this month, I’ll turn to surveys. If that’s not cutting it, I’ll turn to User Testing.

Those are just a few examples of the online options I consider when making income online. I recently revealed every stream of monthly passive income I’ve created from side hustles — all of them are from online sources.

In general, the ability to sit down and do online side hustles from your home during any time of the day is too versatile to pass up. I’ve written for content mills at 5 a.m. and earned $20 an hour doing it. Is anyone up ordering Uber Eats that early in the morning?

Forced creativity

To me, side gigs like Uber Eats are too much like a part-time job.

Sure, you create your own hours and choose the jobs you want to take, but at the end of the day, the job is still the same. You’re told where to go, what/who to pick up and where to deliver the person/item you picked up. It’s repetitive.

Online side hustles like writing force you to be creative if you want to earn more money. I don’t care if you’re self-publishing low-content books on Amazon or doing affiliate marketing, you have to really get creative to create income for yourself.

I enjoy this aspect of online side hustles. Yeah, when I’m not earning money from it, it really hurts. But doing mindless work for Uber just reminds me too much of a regular part-time job.

The verdict

If I needed money really fast, I’d probably be more likely to turn toward a gig like Uber for that income because funds come in quicker.

But if I was just looking to earn some extra money month and wasn’t in a rush to do it, I’d do it online from the convenience of my home.
