Statesmen vs. Politicians
What’s the Difference?
First a bit of political background:-
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has recently been issued a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) by the police for transgressions during the Covid lockdown. In short, he broke his own laws and rules. Which he denied doing … to Members of Parliament, and from the Dispatch Box (a sacred place upholding the traditions of democracy and leadership for centuries). He lied.
Subsequently, over 50 members of his ‘inner circle and Government’ have been issued (FPN), including his wife and № 2 Cabinet member (Rishi Sunak) as well. With more to come. An (FPN) is a criminal offense.
The British public is upset, saddened, and appalled as so many of them could not be with, or bury loved ones properly … and yet the PM broke those same rules just to party at 10 Downing Street, of all places, the seat of British power.
No sitting Prime Minister in the history of the United Kingdom has ever had a criminal record before. This could be likened to some of the issues Trump is accused of during his presidency. In my opinion, both have brought the office they represent in their respective countries, down.
But what I find most worrying, is that they are supported by both “party” and party individuals. Are we becoming that morally bankrupt or is it just indifference? There is so much going on, perhaps we cannot deal with it all.
And my worry is not based on political allegiance, it is about decency and leading a nation-state instead of a political party. Why do we now love Volodymyr Zelenskyi? It is because he fills a void in all of us for true leadership. He is a Statesman, and has addressed the world through various televised appearances … he is with his people, leading them. Not talking … but doing.
Today’s (15/4/202) Guardian (UK) newspaper quoted a senior Government Member of Parliament, Tobias Ellwood, the Conservative (government) chairman of the Commons (House) defense committee as saying :
“The Prime Minister has made his intentions clear, he wants to stay (as Prime Minister), but this is bigger than the prime minister,” he said “It is about the reputation of the party, which all colleagues must defend …”
Perhaps that quote best sums it up, and highlights the issue with politics around the world. It is no longer about the country they serve, it is about the PARTY they belong to!
A senior member of the ruling party wants the country’s Prime Minister to put the party first — NOT the country he leads. That is a politician. Not a Statesman. He could not give a toss about the reputation of the COUNTRY …!
Definition of statesman
1: one versed in the principles or art of government especially: one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping its policies
2: a wise, skillful, and respected political leader
A Statesman leads by example, is respected BY ALL, and does what is right. What is RIGHT is more important to a true statesman than his own agenda or his party’s agenda.
Abraham Lincoln is a perfect example, some may disagree, but he moved his allegiance from the Republican Party to National Union … and it became less about the party and more about what was needed for the country. It brought Democrats and people who would otherwise not vote for the good of a unified country, into the fold. And yes there are other factors, such as some who thought Lincoln was unelectable, but the fact remains, he did what was good for the Country as opposed to the party.
Another example of this for me, is Winston Churchill. Or Tony Benn. Or Nelson Mandela.
Mandela kept the white ‘apartheid’ personal security detail of his opposing white apartheid predecessor as his own security detail, to show his faith in the transition and in the new unity of the country. These were people that only a few months earlier were ridiculing him and abusing him in jail. Assassination was a very real possibility and everyone in his party said, he was mad. He still did it.
Not for him. Not for his party — but for his country.
The world needs many more Statesmen. We need true leaders. And we need to take heed of more of the lesser country’s statesmen and women. Take this lady, Clare Daly, for example :
She is a woman of integrity and power. Listen to her speech to the European Parliament. She is someone I follow closely.
My faith today rests with the youth of this world. They will not stand aside for these politicians much longer. I see a future of street protests and radical action against the governments of the world who line their pockets, cling to power, and support nepotism and cronyism.
Take Russia — Putin is between a rock and a hard place. If he wins this war, can he clamp down on social media, and media in general enough to stop the truth from coming out? I doubt it.
He will have to revert back to the old USSR ways, but the GENIE is already out of the bottle for millions of young Russians. They won’t go back to the old system.
And if he loses, obviously the truth will out. The real question is what will the ordinary people of Russia do. They are a highly educated country — it has the second-highest tertiary education in the 35-member OECD country system, with a 99.7% literacy rate. Education is basically free. It has the 8th best education system in Europe and is 13th in the world. Higher than the USA.
Russians are clever enough to see through any political spin.
Putin’s political gamble has backfired monumentally, and there is no good outcome for him and possibly for Russia too. If the Russian people accept what has been done to Ukraine, they will immediately become world pariahs. If they do not accept it, Russia is in for a turbulent period of change.
And no matter how they react, financially the country has been set back for decades to come. The only real option for that country is if a stateman is elected and the country experiences a total reset.
“Nation resets” are seldom successful on the first attempt. Just look at the Weimar Republic, Most Communist countries, South Africa, most African countries following dictatorial overthrow, and many South American nations. The list is long. The successes VERY short.
To the Statesmen of the World — we ask that you stand up and be counted. To the party politicians …
it really is time for you to sit down.
Only Statesmen can solve issues of climate change, youth anxiety, migration, refugee movements, planet degradation … and the many global issues our world faces. Small-minded politicians fighting for the protection and power of their respective parties or nations have to be relegated to a dumpster now.
Your time has passed.
We wanted a global world, and now, whether we like it or not, we have one. Only a fully integrated global strategy can resolve the issues of this day. Tomorrow will look on us unkindly if we do not step up.
