State’s Rights, Mansplaining, and a Whole Lot of Bullshit
Writing my rage and sadness one article at a time
Anyone else notice an epidemic of mansplaining these last few days? It’s always there, even during the best of times. The undercurrent of superiority, of having to teach us little women the ways of the world because obviously, we don’t understand how anything works.
Expressing dissent over the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe vs. Wade is not anti-democratic as multiple men in my social media feeds insist. When states restrict the rights of individuals, it is absolutely the job of the federal government to intervene and protect those rights.
Our government has failed us.
The Christian right is winning.
This won’t stop here.
The goal is to turn the US into a Christian nation, relegating women back to the domestic sphere, eradicating homosexuality, and outlawing anything that goes against the values dictated by a book cobbled together over thousands of years and curated by men.
This is visible not only in this absurd and disgusting court ruling, but in the plague of book bannings, the attempts to control libraries, and the restrictions teachers face when teaching history or social issues accurately because they aren’t allowed in certain states to acknowledge racial and LGBTQ issues.
We are living in a time when science and reason are rejected time and time again. Our planet is being ravaged and the next generation is predicted to be worse off than the current ones. We are sliding into an irreversible territory, and rather than face our problems and take some responsibility for them, we’re choosing to force women to become brood mares and dictate what happens in the privacy of the bedroom.
Today it’s the right for women to access safe reproductive healthcare and to control their own bodies. Tomorrow it’s LGBTQ rights, and access to contraceptives.
After that? Who knows? They will come for all of us at some point if we let them.
Yes, I will fight to keep abortion legal in my own state. I will rail against this catastrophic decision. And I will tell the men in my life to shut the fuck up if they feel that democracy is intact while my body is commandeered by superstitious fanatics in the name of state’s rights.
