Starting Off My Reading Challenge Dreaming Of Dragons
Book Prompt: Prompt Times 11
I wrote this in response to this prompt from Marrisa.
Your reading goal this year. How many books do you plan to read this year? 10? 20? 100? Share and write about it!
I decided I was going to challenge myself to read 4–5 books a month this year so at the most 60.
Morgan Rice was an author I found by chance while downloading some reading material on Google books. There were a few free Morgan Rice books I quickly became obsessed. It is a solid marketing plan, the first free book made me so curious about what would happen next I had to buy the rest. Kings and Sorcerer's is one of the series of Morgan’s that I had yet to read. I got book one and dove in.

“Kyra stood atop the grassy knoll, the frozen ground hard beneath her boots, snow falling around her, and tried to ignore the biting cold as she raised her bow and focused on her target.” ― Morgan Rice, Rise of the Dragons
This is the opening line, I was drawn in right away. Morgan makes her characters bold, believable, complex and flawed. This book is no different.
Kyra is conflicted about her where her loyalties should go. Everybody seems to think they can tell her what she should be doing with her life. She is trapped by expectations, by being led down a path of fate. Kyra doesn’t believe in fate, fate however, has other ideas. She is the hesitant hero who everyone starts to rely on. Kyra hesitantly starts on a journey of self discovery in this book.
Merk is an assassin looking for redemption a way to blot out his violent past. He is travelling to the Tower to start his life anew away from the violence that has haunted his life. He finds along his journey that his new peace is under constant threat. The two parts of him are in constant conflict leading to him questioning his choices.
Alec who sacrifices himself for his brother and goes on a journey of self discovery. He ends up at the border with the Trolls part of a force holding them back. Becoming depleted by the day they feel like cannon fodder. The Trolls fighting to get through to fight the hated humans.
Never thought I would quote a dragon but these 2 lines in the book really resonated with me. (Did I mention the book had Dragons in it??)
“Strength is not defined in times of peace. It is defined in hardship. Embrace your hardship, do not shy from it. Only then can you overcome it.” ― Morgan Rice, Rise of the Dragons
At the heart of this book is the struggle between good vs evil, adventure vs home, fate vs finding your own path. What it means to have the weight of expectation firmly on your shoulders.
The book is written from the main characters perspectives. Each chapter is focussed on a different person. We get to view everything through the eyes of the character. You quickly form an attachment to these people feeling their feelings. You also get to see an incident from several points of view which is really interesting.
Morgan came in strong with this book, there are 5 more in the series. I think I have found my next 5 books in my challenge. Will check back in once I’ve read the rest of them and let you know how the story unfolds.
Morgan Rice books are brilliant, some have maps!! Check her other series out.
Alan Simpson sets out some alternative goal making in his article and I really liked them
